Abstract
The present invention relates to a hinge assembly for use with eyeglasses. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a hinge assembly to attach a temple to a main frame of a pair of eyeglasses. The hinge assembly of this embodiment may include a pair of hinge members (formed as a ball and socket) rotationally attached to one another and each resiliently attached (e.g., using a spring) to a respective one of the temple and the main frame of the pair of eyeglasses.

33 . A hinge assembly, comprising:
a joint element comprising first and second essentially orthogonal plate members, wherein the first plate member has an opening extending from one side to the other and wherein the second plate member has an opening extending from one side to the other; a first pivot pin; and a second pivot pin; wherein the first plate member of the joint element is pivotally mounted to an end of a temple of a pair of eyeglasses by the first pivot pin passing through at least one opening in the end of the temple of the pair of eyeglasses and the opening in the first plate member; and wherein the second plate member of the joint element is pivotally mounted to a temple region of the main frame of the pair of eyeglasses by the second pivot pin passing through at least one opening in the end of the temple region of the main frame and the opening in the second plate member.
34 . The hinge assembly of claim 33 , further comprising a spring disposed in a cavity in the end of the temple and a pad disposed in the cavity in the end of the temple between the spring and the first plate member, wherein the spring biases the pad against a surface of the first plate member as the first plate member pivots.
35 . The hinge assembly of claim 34 , wherein the shape of the surface of the first plate member and the biasing of the pad against the surface of the first plate member holds the temple in at least one of a folded state and an unfolded state.
36 . The hinge assembly of claim 35 , wherein the shape of the surface of the first plate member against which the pad is biased comprises at least one curved area and at least one essentially flat area.
37 . The hinge assembly of claim 33 , further comprising a spring disposed in a cavity in the temple region of the main frame and a pad disposed in the cavity in the temple region of the main frame between the spring and the second plate member, wherein the spring biases the pad against a surface of the second plate member as the second plate member pivots.
38 . The hinge assembly of claim 37 , wherein the shape of the surface of the second plate member and the biasing of the pad against the surface of the second plate member holds the temple in at least one of a folded state and an unfolded state.
39 . The hinge assembly of claim 38 , wherein the shape of the surface of the second plate member against which the pad is biased comprises at least one curved area and at least one essentially flat area.
40 . The hinge assembly of claim 33 , wherein the first plate member pivots up and down relative to the end of the temple.
41 . The hinge assembly of claim 33 , wherein the first plate member pivots laterally relative to the end of the temple.
42 . The hinge assembly of claim 33 , wherein the second plate member pivots up and down relative to the temple region of the main frame.
43 . The hinge assembly of claim 33 , wherein the second plate member pivots laterally relative to temple region of the main frame.
44 . A pair of hinge assemblies, comprising:
(a) a first hinge assembly, comprising: a joint element comprising first and second essentially orthogonal plate members, wherein the first plate member has an opening extending from one side to the other and wherein the second plate member has an opening extending from one side to the other; a first pivot pin; and a second pivot pin; wherein the first plate member of the joint element is pivotally mounted to an end of a right temple of a pair of eyeglasses by the first pivot pin passing through at least one opening in the end of the right temple of the pair of eyeglasses and the opening in the first plate member; and wherein the second plate member of the joint element is pivotally mounted to a right temple region of a main frame of the pair of eyeglasses by the second pivot pin passing through at least one opening in the end of the right temple region of the main frame and the opening in the second plate member; and (b) a second hinge assembly, comprising: a joint element comprising first and second essentially orthogonal plate members, wherein the first plate member has an opening extending from one side to the other and wherein the second plate member has an opening extending from one side to the other; a first pivot pin; and a second pivot pin; wherein the first plate member of the joint element is pivotally mounted to an end of a left temple of the pair of eyeglasses by the first pivot pin passing through at least one opening in the end of the left temple of the pair of eyeglasses and the opening in the first plate member; and wherein the second plate member of the joint element is pivotally mounted to a left temple region of the main frame of the pair of eyeglasses by the second pivot pin passing through at least one opening in the left temple region of the main frame and the opening in the second plate member.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
