Multifunctional telescopic monopolar/bipolar surgical device and method therefore
Abstract
A multifunctional telescopic monopolar/bipolar electrosurgery pencil is disclosed for use with an electrosurgery unit (ESU). The monopolar/bipolar electrosurgery pencil includes a bipolar electrode having an insulator sandwiched between an active electrode and a return electrode wherein the bipolar electrode is connected to a handpiece capable of alternately effectuating cutting and coagulation with the bipolar electrode. The monopolar/bipolar electrosurgery pencil is capable of functioning as both a monopolar and bipolar device and can be used for open and closed laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Telescopic means for adjusting the length of the bipolar electrode is also provided as are means for smoke evacuation and suction/irrigation. The multifunctional telescopic monopolar/bipolar device can also be adapted for use with an ESU argon beam coagulator.

exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . An electrosurgery pencil for use in electrosurgery procedures comprising:
a hand piece having a distal end and a proximal end and a straight, non-bending, non-detachable smoke evacuation channel therein having an approximately same diameter throughout the channel wherein the length of the channel is in both horizontal and vertical alignment with the distal and proximal ends of the hand piece; an electrode contained within at least a portion of the hand piece such that it is in electrical contact with an electrosurgery unit; and a connector element near the proximal end of the hand piece for connecting the smoke evacuation channel to a smoke evacuator tubing.
2 . The electrosurgery pencil of claim 1 for use in laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
3 . The electrosurgery pencil of claim 1 wherein said hand piece comprises means for alternately switching between cutting and coagulation using said electrode.
4 . The electrosurgery pencil of claim 1 further comprising smoke evacuation means coupled to said electrode for removing smoke and debris produced during a medical procedure using said electrosurgery pencil.
5 . Use of an electrosurgical pencil of claim 1 in an electrosurgery procedure.
6 . Use of an electrosurgical pencil of claim 1 in laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
7 . An electrosurgery pencil for use in electrosurgery procedures comprising:
a hand piece having a distal end and proximal end and a channel therein having an approximately same diameter throughout the channel; a telescopic member having a channel therein wherein said telescopic member is circumferentially contained within said handpiece; an electrode contained within at least a portion of the hand piece such that it is in electrical contact with an electrosurgery unit; and a connector element near the proximal end of the hand piece for connecting the smoke evacuation channel to a smoke evacuator tubing.
8 . The electrosurgery pencil of claim 7 for use in laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
9 . The electrosurgery pencil of claim 7 wherein said hand piece comprises means for alternately switching between cutting and coagulation using said electrode.
10 . The electrosurgery pencil of claim 7 further comprising smoke evacuation means coupled to said electrode for removing smoke and debris produced during a medical procedure using said electrosurgery pencil.
