Abstract

A method and system is presented for a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) enabled WCDMA handset to receive reference locations from a network location server based on RNC geographic service areas. The GNSS enabled WCDMA handset may generate a location request comprising an RNC ID and may determine its location based on the received reference location and/or received GNSS assistance data. The RNC geographic service area and/or an area of uncertainty may comprise one or more of a latitude, a longitude and uncertainty value. Accuracy of the RNC geographic service area and/or the area of uncertainty may be increased over time. The RNC service area may be determined by the network location server based on an average of a plurality of handset locations that are reported by handsets that are served by the RNC. Handset location reports may comprise the RNC ID.
