Abstract

Disclosed is a method and kit for installing a window or other fenestra mounted object between joists in a structure having a ceiling. The method for installing a fenestra mounted object into a structure having a ceiling supported by joists, comprising the steps of: creating a void between two joists of the structure, with at least some portion of the void being above the plane of the bottom of the joists; creating an opening in an exterior wall covering of the structure aligned with the void such that light or air external to the structure may enter the structure through the opening and the void; and installing a fenestra mounted object in the void. Trim may be installed around the interior and exterior portions of the fenestra mounted object to give a finished appearance.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method for installing a fenestra mounted object into a structure having at least one ceiling supported by joists, comprising the steps of:
 (a) creating a void between two joists of the structure, with at least some portion of the void being above the plane of the bottom of the joists; (b) creating an opening in an exterior wall covering of the structure aligned with the void; and (c) installing a fenestra mounted object in the void.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the void is created by the removal of at least one section of a rim joist.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein a bottom most portion of the void is created above a top plate of a wall structure.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the void is formed between adjacent joists on a standard spacing of 16 inches on center.

5 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of attaching at least one covering to an interior portion of the structure such that at least one recess is formed in the ceiling to allow the fenestra mounted object to be visible from below the ceiling.

6 . The method of claim 5 wherein the recess is substantially wedge shaped, declining from a line near the top of the fenestra mounted object to a line on the plane of the ceiling.

7 . The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of installing at least one nailer to at least one joist to aid the installation of the covering.

8 . The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of installing at least one trim component to join the covering to the ceiling.

9 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of removing at least one section of the ceiling between the joists.

10 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of installing at least one trim component around the exterior of the object.

         11 . A kit comprising:
 (a) At least one fenestra mounted object; (b) at least a pair of nailers with at least one surface of each nailer enabled to receive standard building surface treatment held in place with standard fasteners for said surface treatment; (c) at least one cross nailer; and (d) at least one template to assist with making at least one opening in a ceiling.

12 . The kit of claim 5 further comprising at least one manufactured trim component configured to be installed proximate to the at least one fenestra mounted object and fit into the at least one opening in the ceiling.

13 . The kit of claim 12 where the at least one manufactured trim component is made from molded plastic.

14 . A method for installing a fenestra mounted object into a finished structure having a ceiling supported by joists, comprising the steps of:
 (a) locating the joists in the ceiling; (b) removing a section of the ceiling between the joists; (c) creating a void between two joists of the structure, with at least some portion of the void being above the plane of the ceiling; (d) creating an opening in an exterior wall covering of the structure aligned with the void; and (e) installing a fenestra mounted object in the void.

15 . The method of claim 14 further comprising the step of attaching at least one covering to an interior portion of the structure such that at least one recess is formed in the ceiling to allow the at least one fenestra mounted object to be visible from below the ceiling.
