Abstract

A system for and method of detecting interference in a communication system. In an embodiment, a receiver acquires a communication signal, the communication signal comprising a carrier signal and an in-band interference signal. A signal processor conditions the communication signal and extracts the in-band interference signal without interrupting the carrier signal to form an error signal. The error signal is representative of the in-band interference signal. The signal processor is further configured to process the error signal to obtain one or more spectral properties of the error signal in a manner suitable for display.

       39 . A system for detecting in-band interference in a communication system comprising:
 a receiver for acquiring a communication signal, the communication signal comprising a carrier signal and an in-band interference signal; and   a signal processor for conditioning the communication signal and extracting the in-band interference signal without interrupting the carrier signal to form an error signal that is representative of the in-band interference signal and wherein the signal processor is further configured to process the error signal to obtain one or more spectral properties of the error signal in a manner suitable for display.

The system according to  claim 39 , wherein the carrier signal comprises a radio-frequency signal and said conditioning the communication signal includes down-converting the communication signal, wherein the signal processor is without knowledge of radio-frequency or modulation parameters of the carrier signal.

The system according to  claim 39 , wherein the carrier signal comprises a radio-frequency signal and said conditioning the communication signal includes down-converting the communication signal, wherein the signal processor is with knowledge of radio-frequency or modulation parameters of the carrier signal.

       48 . The system according to  claim 39 , wherein the signal processor is further configured to perform blind equalization. 
   
   
       49 . The system according to  claim 48 , wherein the error signal comprises an error vector and the signal processor is further configured to remove M initial samples of the error vector, wherein the M initial samples occur while the blind equalization is converging. 
   
   
       50 . The system according to  claim 39 , wherein the signal processor is further configured to remove a DC bias from the error signal. 
   
   
       51 . The system according to  claim 39 , wherein the receiver is further configured to receive the signal, filter the signal and digitize the filtered signal. 
   
   
       52 . The system according to  claim 39 , wherein the spectral properties are selected from a group consisting of a power spectrum of the interference signal and a detected energy of the interference signal. 
   
   
       53 . The system according to  claim 39 , wherein the spectral properties are selected from a group consisting of a center frequency of the interference signal and a bandwidth of the interference signal. 
   
   
       54 . The system according to  claim 39 , further comprising a display that displays the one or more spectral properties. 
   
   
       55 . A method of detecting in-band interference in a communication system comprising steps of:
 acquiring a communication signal, the communication signal comprising a carrier signal and an in-band interference signal, said acquiring including receiving the communication signal at a receiver;   processing the communication signal to extract the interference signal without interrupting the carrier signal to form an error signal that is representative of the interference signal;   processing the error signal to obtain one or more spectral properties of the error signal; and   displaying the one or more spectral properties.

The method according to  claim 55 , wherein the carrier signal comprises a radio-frequency signal and said processing the communication signal includes down-converting the communication signal, said processing being performed without knowledge of radio-frequency or modulation parameters of the carrier signal.

The method according to  claim 55 , wherein the carrier signal comprises a radio-frequency signal and said processing the communication signal includes down-converting the communication signal, said processing being performed with knowledge of radio-frequency and modulation parameters of the carrier signal. 
   
   
       58 . The method according to  claim 55 , further comprising extracting noise from the communication signal. 
   
   
       59 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein the communication system performs as a wireless communication system. 
   
   
       60 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein the communication system performs as a satellite communication system. 
   
   
       61 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein said acquiring the communication signal includes storing a digitized filtered signal into memory. 
   
   
       62 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein processing the communication signal includes calculating a center frequency and a bandwidth of the carrier signal. 
   
   
       63 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein said processing the communication signal includes down-converting the communication signal to baseband of the carrier signal. 
   
   
       64 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein said processing the communication signal includes performing a blind-equalization process. 
   
   
       65 . The method according to  claim 64 , wherein the error signal comprises an error vector and further comprising removing M initial samples of the error vector, wherein the M initial samples occur while the blind equalization process is converging. 
   
   
       66 . The method according to  claim 55 , including removing a DC bias from the error signal. 
   
   
       67 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein the spectral properties are selected from a group consisting of a power spectrum of the interference signal and a detected energy of the interference signal. 
   
   
       68 . The method according to  claim 55 , wherein the spectral properties are selected from a group consisting of a center frequency of the interference signal and a bandwidth of the interfering signal.
