Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for cough

Abstract

The use of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for the treatment of nonproductive cough caused by viruses or bacteria and a combination of at least one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with at least one antitussive in a formulation to treat coughs.

1 . The use of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of nonproductive cough as symptom of infections of the respiratory organs caused by viruses or bacteria. 
   
   
       2 . The use of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug for the treatment of nonproductive cough as symptom of infections of the respiratory organs caused by viruses or bacteria. 
   
   
       3 . The use of  claim 2 , wherein said non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase. 
   
   
       4 . The use of  claim 2 , wherein said non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug is selected from the group consisting of ibuprofen, acetylsalicylic acid, methyl salicylate, diflunisal, benorylate, naproxen, diclofenac, sulindac, carprofen, fenoprofen, flurbiprofen, ketoprofen, ketorolac, loxoprofen, indomethacin, tiaprofenic acid, mefenamic acid, meclofenamic acid, phenylbutazone, oxyphenbutazone, meloxicam, lornoxicam, piroxicam, nimesulide, the pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof and mixtures and combinations thereof. 
   
   
       5 . The use of  claim 4 , wherein said ibuprofen is in the form of a racemic mixture of R-ibuprofen and S-ibuprofen. 
   
   
       6 . The use of  claim 4 , wherein said ibuprofen is in the form of S-ibuprofen. 
   
   
       7 . The use of  claim 4 , wherein said ibuprofen is in the form of R-ibuprofen. 
   
   
       8 . The use of  claim 3 , wherein said inhibitor of cyclooxygenase is a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase 2. 
   
   
       9 . The use of  claim 8 , wherein said cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of celecoxib, lumiracoxib, etoricoxib, parecoxib, valdecoxib, rofecoxib, their pharmacologically acceptable salts and mixtures and combinations thereof. 
   
   
       10 . The use of  claim 1 , wherein said non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug comprises the sole active pharmaceutical ingredient of said medicament. 
   
   
       11 . The use of  claim 1 , wherein said medicament comprises a combination of said non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and at least one antitussive. 
   
   
       12 . The use of  claim 11 , wherein said at least one antitussive is selected from the group consisting of codeine, dihydrocodeine, dextromethorphan, hydrocodone, clobutinol, pentoxyverine and mixtures and combinations thereof. 
   
   
       13 . A pharmaceutical formulation for the treatment of nonproductive cough comprising a combination of at least one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and at least one antitussive. 
   
   
       14 . The pharmaceutical formulation of  claim 13 , wherein said at least one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and said at least one antitussive are present in a joint dosage form. 
   
   
       15 . The pharmaceutical formulation of  claim 13 , in the form of a kit in which an effective amount of the at least one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug is present in one container and an effective amount of the at least one antitussive is present in another container. 
   
   
       16 . A pack unit or kit comprising a plurality of unit compositions that comprise at least one non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and at least one antitussive, wherein said unit compositions represent a plurality of single doses for treatment of nonproductive cough as a symptom of an infection caused by a virus or bacteria. 
   
   
       17 . A method for the treatment of nonproductive cough as symptom of an infection of the respiratory organs caused by a virus or bacteria, comprising the step of administering an effective amount of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug to a patient in need of treatment. 
   
   
       18 . The method of  claim 17 , further comprising the step of administering an antitussive to said patient in an amount less than the recommended dose for said antitussive as single-drug product.
