Abstract

A method for recording information from a surface of a substrate. The substrate is provided with a first position code and a second position code. The method comprises: (i) obtaining an image of the surface of the substrate using an optically imaging pen; (ii) determining whether the first position code or the second position code is present in the image; and (iii) determining the location of the pen. If the first position code is detected in the image, then the location is interpreted as handwritten input on the surface. Alternatively, if the second position code is detected in the image, then the location is used to determine if the pen is in a particular zone of the surface and a predetermined function associated with the zone is performed.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method for recording information from a surface of a substrate, said substrate being provided with a first position code which codes locations of a plurality of first points, and which, in one more zones, is further provided with a second position code which codes locations of a plurality of second points, the method comprising:
obtaining an image of the surface of the substrate using an optically imaging pen; determining whether the first position code or the second position code is present in the image; determining at least one location of the pen using the imaged first position code or the imaged second position code; and if the first position code is detected in the image:
interpreting said at least one location as handwritten input on said surface; or
if the second position code is detected in the image:
determining, on the basis of the second position code, whether the pen is placed in one of said zones on the surface; and
performing a predetermined function associated with said zone.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said second position code contains a flag distinguishing said second position code from said first position code.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said zone identifies a button on said surface, said button having a predetermined function associated therewith.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said predetermined function comprises providing feedback to a user when the zone is detected.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said surface comprises one or more input fields for accepting handwritten input, each of said input fields containing said first position code.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein if the first position code is detected in the image, the determined locations are stored as digital ink in a memory buffer of said pen before being interpreted as handwritten input on said surface.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first position code identifies an identity of the substrate.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second position code identifies an identity of the substrate.
