Abstract

A laser sighting device for a firearm and a method for mounting a laser sighting device on a firearm. A laser sighting device for a firearm comprises a holder adapted to attach to the handgrip of the firearm such that the firearm may be held in a firing position by the handgrip with the device installed thereon, the holder including a first compartment for receiving a laser and holding the laser so as to propagate a beam of light substantially in the muzzle direction of the firearm, and a second compartment for receiving a battery to power the laser, a switch for activation of the laser by the user's hand holding the handgrip in firing position, and an electrical circuit disposed within the holder for interconnecting a laser disposed in the first compartment, a battery disposed in the second compartment and the switch.

       28 . A laser sighting device for mounting on a handgrip of a firearm, the handgrip having a front, a back, and two opposing sides, the device comprising:
 a holder shaped to conform to the shape of a portion of the handgrip such that the firearm may be held in a firing position by the handgrip with the device attached thereto;   a laser disposed in said holder so as to propagate a beam of light substantially in the muzzle direction of the firearm;   a switch, disposed in said holder, for activation of said laser by the user's hand holding the handgrip in firing position; and   an electrical circuit disposed within said holder for interconnecting said laser and said switch, wherein said holder and said circuit comprise a self contained assembly that may be attached to the handgrip, said circuit comprising a membrane circuit.   
   
   
       29 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , further comprising a pin for engaging said holder and the handgrip so as to secure said holder to the handgrip. 
   
   
       30 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , wherein the holder further comprises a hole to receive a pin for engaging said holder and the handgrip so as to secure said holder to the handgrip. 
   
   
       31 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , further comprising a battery disposed in said holder to power the laser. 
   
   
       32 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , wherein said holder has an interior surface conforming to the shape of a firearm handgrip, and said membrane circuit is disposed along said interior surface. 
   
   
       33 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , further comprising means for adjusting the elevation and windage of a beam of light emitted from the laser. 
   
   
       34 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , wherein said switch is imbedded in said holder and said holder includes a flexible membrane disposed over the switch for activation thereof by pressure on said membrane from the hand of a user. 
   
   
       35 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , wherein said switch is disposed in said holder at an upper central position thereof so as to be actuated by a firm grip of the user's hand holding the firearm by the handgrip. 
   
   
       36 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , wherein said holder comprises a backstrap of the handgrip adapted to be releasably attached to a firearm. 
   
   
       37 . The laser sighting device of  claim 28 , wherein said portion of the handgrip comprises a backstrap of the handgrip. 
   
   
       38 . A laser sighting device for mounting on the handgrip of a firearm, the handgrip having a front, a back, and two opposing sides, the device comprising:
 a holder shaped to conform to the shape of a portion of the handgrip thereof such that the firearm may be held in a firing position by the handgrip with the device attached thereto;   a laser disposed in said holder so as to propagate a beam of light substantially in the muzzle direction of the firearm;   a switch, disposed in said holder, for activation of said laser by the user's hand holding the handgrip in firing position;   an electrical circuit disposed within said holder for interconnecting said laser and said switch, wherein said holder, said laser, said switch and said circuit comprise a self contained assembly that may be attached to the firearm; and   a hole in said holder to receive a pin for engaging said holder and the handgrip so as to secure said holder to the handgrip.   
   
   
       39 . The laser sighting device of  claim 38 , further comprising a pin for engaging said holder and the handgrip so as to secure said holder to the handgrip. 
   
   
       40 . The laser sighting device of  claim 38 , further comprising a battery disposed in said holder to power the laser. 
   
   
       41 . The laser sighting device of  claim 38 , further comprising means for adjusting the elevation and windage of a beam of light emitted from the laser. 
   
   
       42 . The laser sighting device of  claim 38 , wherein said switch is imbedded in said holder and said holder includes a flexible membrane disposed over the switch for activation thereof by pressure on said membrane from the hand of a user. 
   
   
       43 . The laser sighting device of  claim 38 , wherein said switch is disposed in said holder at an upper central position thereof so as to be actuated by a firm grip of the user's hand holding the firearm by the handgrip. 
   
   
       44 . The laser sighting device of  claim 38 , wherein said holder comprises a backstrap of the handgrip configured to be releasably attached to a firearm. 
   
   
       45 . The laser sighting device of  claim 38 , wherein said portion of the handgrip comprises a backstrap of the handgrip. 
   
   
       46 . A laser sighting device for mounting on a firearm, comprising:
 a backstrap configured to be attached to the firearm;   a laser disposed in said backstrap so as to propagate a beam of light substantially in the muzzle direction of the firearm;   a switch, disposed in said backstrap, for activation of said laser by the user's hand holding the firearm in firing position;   an electrical circuit disposed within said backstrap for interconnecting said laser and said switch, wherein said backstrap, said laser, said switch and said circuit comprise a self contained assembly that may be attached to the firearm; and   a hole in said backstrap to receive a pin for engaging said backstrap and the handgrip so as to attach said backstrap to the handgrip.   
   
   
       47 . The laser sighting device of  claim 46 , further comprising a pin for engaging said backstrap and the handgrip so as to secure said holder to the handgrip. 
   
   
       48 . The laser sighting device of  claim 46 , wherein said circuit comprises a membrane circuit. 
   
   
       49 . The laser sighting device of  claim 46 , further comprising means for adjusting the elevation and windage of a beam of light emitted from the laser. 
   
   
       50 . The laser sighting device of  claim 46 , wherein said switch is imbedded in said backstrap and said backstrap includes a flexible membrane disposed over the switch for activation thereof by pressure on said membrane from the hand of a user. 
   
   
       51 . The laser sighting device of  claim 46 , wherein said switch is disposed in said backstrap at an upper central position thereof so as to be actuated by a firm grip of the user's hand holding the firearm in firing position. 
   
   
       52 . The laser sighting device of  claim 46 , further comprising a battery disposed in said holder to power the laser. 
   
   
       53 . A laser sighting device for mounting on a firearm comprising:
 a backstrap configured to be attached to the firearm;   a laser disposed in said backstrap so as to propagate a beam of light substantially in the muzzle direction of the firearm;   a switch, disposed in said backstrap, for activation of said laser by the user's hand holding the firearm in firing position; and   an electrical circuit disposed within said backstrap for interconnecting said laser and said switch, wherein said backstrap, said laser, said switch and said circuit comprise a self contained assembly that may be attached to the firearm, wherein said circuit comprises a membrane circuit.   
   
   
       54 . The laser sighting device of  claim 53 , further comprising means for adjusting the elevation and windage of a beam of light emitted from the laser. 
   
   
       55 . The laser sighting device of  claim 53 , wherein said switch is imbedded in said backstrap and said backstrap includes a flexible membrane disposed over the switch for activation thereof by pressure on said membrane from the hand of a user. 
   
   
       56 . The laser sighting device of  claim 53 , wherein said switch is disposed in said backstrap at an upper central position thereof so as to be actuated by a firm grip of the user's hand holding the firearm in firing position. 
   
   
       57 . The laser sighting device of  claim 53 , further comprising a battery disposed in said holder to power the laser. 
   
   
       58 . A laser sighting device for mounting on the handgrip of a firearm, the handgrip having a front, a back, and two opposing sides, the device comprising:
 a holder extending downwardly on the back of the handgrip thereof such that the firearm may be held in a firing position by the handgrip with the device attached thereto;   a laser disposed in said holder so as to propagate a beam of light substantially in the muzzle direction of the firearm;   a switch, disposed in said holder, for activation of said laser by the user's hand holding the handgrip in firing position;   an electrical circuit disposed within said holder for interconnecting said laser and said switch, wherein said holder, said laser, said switch and said circuit comprise a self contained assembly that may be attached to the firearm; and   a hole in said holder to receive a fastener for engaging said holder and the handgrip so as to secure said holder to the handgrip.   
   
   
       59 . The laser sighting device of  claim 58 , wherein said holder is configured to conform to the shape of the back of the handgrip. 
   
   
       60 . The laser sighting device of  claim 58 , further comprising a pin as said fastener for engaging said holder and the handgrip so as to secure said holder to the handgrip. 
   
   
       61 . The laser sighting device of  claim 58 , wherein said circuit comprises a membrane circuit. 
   
   
       62 . The laser sighting device of  claim 58 , further comprising a battery disposed in said holder to power the laser. 
   
   
       63 . The laser sighting device of  claim 58 , further comprising means for adjusting the elevation and windage of a beam of light emitted from the laser.
