.- 19 . (canceled)

. A method for preventing a picornaviral infection in a patient, said method comprising administering to a patient in need of such prevention an effective amount of the compound of Formula I:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

. A method for preventing a picornaviral infection in a patient, said method comprising administering to a patient in need of such prevention an effective amount of the compound of Formula II:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

. A method according to claim 20 , wherein a precursor of said compound is administered in the form of a prodrug.

. A method according to claim 21 , wherein a precursor of said compound is administered in the form of a prodrug.

. A method according to claim 22 , wherein said prodrug is pleconaril.

. A method according to claim 23 , wherein said prodrug is pleconaril.

. A method of using pleconaril as a prodrug for preventing picornaviral infections in a patient, said method comprising administering to said patient an effective amount of pleconaril or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
