Abstract
Oxadiazolyl-phenoxyalkylisoxazoles and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, compositions comprising oxadiazolyl-phenoxyalkylisoxazole compounds or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and methods for using oxadiazolyl-phenoxyalkylisoxzazole compounds or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof as anti-picornaviral agents are described herein. The methods include using pleconaril as a prodrug for conversion to anti-picornaviral compounds in vivo.

20 . A method for preventing a picornaviral infection in a patient, said method comprising administering to a patient in need of such prevention an effective amount of the compound of Formula I:
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
21 . A method for preventing a picornaviral infection in a patient, said method comprising administering to a patient in need of such prevention an effective amount of the compound of Formula II:
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
22 . A method according to claim 20 , wherein a precursor of said compound is administered in the form of a prodrug.
23 . A method according to claim 21 , wherein a precursor of said compound is administered in the form of a prodrug.
24 . A method according to claim 22 , wherein said prodrug is pleconaril.
25 . A method according to claim 23 , wherein said prodrug is pleconaril.
