Abstract

In a receiver transparent Q-mode, i.e., a Q-mode that is only implemented by a transmitter, the receiver is unaware of the Q-mode state of the transmitter. In this type of Q-mode configuration, the transmitter could enter and exit Q-mode as desired while the receiver, could, for example, continue to function as if operating normally, such as in “showtime.” Through this approach, it is not necessary for the receiver to detect the transmitter's entry and exit of Q-mode.

       14 . A method for reducing power consumption in a multicarrier communications transceiver comprising:
 receiving, at a transmitter portion, an all-zeros bit pattern;   determining whether to send a Q-mode symbol to a receiver;   transmitting, from the transmitter portion, one of:
 the Q-mode symbol, or 
 a modulated, all-zeros symbol; and 
   when either the Q-mode symbol is transmitted, or the modulated all-zeros symbol is the same as the Q-mode symbol, the receiver continues processing in a normal mode.   
   
   
       15 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein the normal mode is showtime. 
   
   
       16 . The method of  claim 14 , further comprising determining whether information bits are received at the transmitter portion. 
   
   
       17 . The method of  claim 16 , further comprising either:
 remaining in a Q-mode, or   transmitting DMT symbols with the information bits.   
   
   
       18 . A system for reducing power consumption in a multicarrier communications transceiver comprising:
 a transmitter portion that:
 receives an all-zeros bit pattern and determines whether to send a Q-mode symbol to a receiver; and 
 transmits one of: 
 the Q-mode symbol, or 
 a modulated, all-zeros symbol, 
   wherein, when either the Q-mode symbol is transmitted, or the modulated all-zeros symbol is the same as the Q-mode symbol, the receiver continues processing in a normal mode.   
   
   
       19 . The system of  claim 18 , wherein the normal mode is showtime. 
   
   
       20 . The system of  claim 18 , further comprising means for determining whether information bits are received at the transmitter portion. 
   
   
       21 . The system of  claim 20 , wherein the transmitter portion either:
 remains in a Q-mode, or   transmits DMT symbols with the information bits.
