Abstract
On an adapter mounting portion 3 a having a projecting cross section which is formed on a cap 3 of a small-sized memory card 1 , a recessed portion of an adapter 2 side is fitted so that both parts are formed as an integral unit in a replaceable manner. Accordingly, the small-sized memory card 1 can maintain the dimensional compatibility with respect to existing memory cards whereby the small-sized memory card 1 can be used also in equipment which is designed to cope with the existing memory cards.

49 . A memory card comprising:
a substrate having a first side and a second side, a length of the second side being shorter than that of the first side; a first flash memory chip mounted over the substrate and having a third side and a fourth side, a length of the fourth side being shorter than that of the third side; a controller chip coupled to the first and a second flash memory chip; and a sealing member covering the first and the second flash memory chips and the controller chip, wherein the first flash memory chip is mounted over the substrate so that the third side of the first flash memory chip is in parallel with the first side of the substrate.
50 . A memory card according to claim 49 ,
wherein the memory card is capable of being connected to an adapter, wherein planar dimensions of the memory card without the adapter are smaller than the dimensions of the adapter, and wherein a planar area of the first flash memory chip is larger than that of the controller chip.
51 . A memory card according to claim 49 , further comprising:
a plurality of external terminals on the substrate and coupled to the controller chip and including a Vss terminal, a Vdd terminal, a CLK terminal, a DAT terminal, and a CMD terminal.
52 . A memory card comprising:
a substrate having a long side and a short side whose length is shorter than that of the long side thereof; a flash memory chip having a long side and a short side whose length is shorter than that of the long side thereof and mounted over the substrate so that the long side of the substrate is in parallel with the long side of the flash memory chip; a controller chip coupled to the first and a second flash memory chip; and a sealing member covering the first and the second flash memory chips and the controller chip.
53 . A memory card according to claim 52 ,
wherein the memory card is capable of being connected to an adapter, wherein planar dimensions of the memory card without the adapter are smaller than the dimensions of the adapter, and wherein a planar area of the first flash memory chip is larger than that of the controller chip.
54 . A memory card according to claim 52 , further comprising:
a plurality of external terminals on the substrate and coupled to the controller chip and including a Vss terminal, a Vdd terminal, a CLK terminal, a DAT terminal, and a CMD terminal.
55 . A memory card comprising:
a substrate having a first side and a second side, a length of the first side being longer than that of the second side; a first flash memory chip mounted over the substrate and having a third side and a fourth side, a length of the third side being longer than that of the fourth side; a second flash memory chip stacked over the first flash memory chip and having a fifth side and a sixth side, a length of the fifth side being longer than that of the sixth side; a controller chip coupled to the first and the second flash memory chips; and a sealing member covering the first and the second flash memory chips and the controller chip, wherein the first side, the third side and the fifth side are in parallel to each other.
56 . A memory card according to claim 55 ,
wherein the memory card is capable of being connected to an adapter, wherein planar dimensions of the memory card without the adapter are smaller than the dimensions of the adapter, and wherein a planar area of the first flash memory chip is larger than that of the controller chip.
57 . A memory card according to claim 55 , further comprising:
a plurality of external terminals on the substrate and coupled to the controller chip and including a Vss terminal, a Vdd terminal, a CLK terminal, a DAT terminal, and a CMD terminal.
58 . A memory card comprising:
a substrate having a long side and a short side, a length of the long side thereof being longer than that of the second side thereof; a first flash memory chip having a third side and a fourth side, a length of the long side thereof being longer than that of the second side thereof, the first flash memory chip being mounted over the substrate so that the long side of the substrate is in parallel with the long side of the first flash memory chip; a second flash memory chip having a long side and a short side, a length of the long side thereof being longer than that of the short side thereof, the second flash memory chip being stacked over the first flash memory chip so that the long side of the first flash memory chip is in parallel with the long side of the second flash memory chip and; a controller chip coupled to the first and the second flash memory chips; and a sealing member covering the first and the second flash memory chips and the controller chip.
59 . A memory card according to claim 58 ,
wherein the memory card is capable of being connected to an adapter, wherein planar dimensions of the memory card without the adapter are smaller than the dimensions of the adapter, and wherein a planar area of the first flash memory chip is larger than that of the controller chip.
60 . A memory card according to claim 58 , further comprising:
