Abstract

A light source is provided comprising an LED component having an emitting surface, which may comprise: i) an LED capable of emitting light at a first wavelength; and ii) a re-emitting semiconductor construction which comprises a second potential well not located within a pn junction having an emitting surface; or which may alternately comprise a first potential well located within a pn junction and a second potential well not located within a pn junction; and which additionally comprises a converging optical element.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . an article comprising:
a construction absorbing light at a first wavelength and emitting light at a longer second wavelength and comprising a first potential well and an emitting surface; and an optical element extracting light that would otherwise be totally internally reflected and comprising a side and a base, the base substantially matching the emitting surface in size.

2 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the construction comprises a quantum well.

3 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the construction comprises a II-VI semiconductor.

4 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the construction comprises a Cd(Mg)ZnSe alloy.

5 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the construction further comprises an absorbing layer absorbing light at the first wavelength and transmitting light at the second wavelength.

6 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the construction further comprises a support layer that is substantially transparent at the first and second wavelengths.

7 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the optical element comprises at least two converging sides.

8 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the optical element comprises a regular shape.

9 . A plurality of articles of claim 1 arranged in an array.

       10 . A light source comprising:
the article of claim 1 ; and a second potential well emitting light at the first wavelength in response to an applied electric current.

       11 . A backlight comprising the article of claim 1 .

       12 . The backlight of claim 11 being a direct-lit backlight.

13 . The backlight of claim 11 being an edge-lit backlight.

14 . The backlight of claim 11 further comprising a reflective polarizer.
