Methods of treating skin with aromatic skin-active ingredients

Abstract

A method for treating skin, reducing oxidative damage to a skin cell, reducing lipoxygenase (LO) activity in a skin cell, reducing cyclooxygenase (COX) activity in a skin cell, reducing tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in a skin cell, or reduction matrix metalloproteinase enzyme activity in a skin cell comprising contacting skin or a skin cell with an aromatic skin-active ingredient.

1 . A method of treating or preventing a skin condition comprising topically applying a composition that includes an aromatic skin-active ingredient on skin, wherein the topical application of the composition treats or prevents the skin condition. 
   
   
       2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein a cosmeceutically effective amount of the aromatic skin-active ingredient is applied on the skin. 
   
   
       3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein a cosmeceutically effective amount is from 0.005% to 2.0% by weight of the composition.

       5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the composition includes at least two, three, four, five, six, or seven aromatic skin-active ingredients. 
   
   
       6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the composition is an emulsion, a cream, a lotion, a solution, an anhydrous base, a gel, or an ointment. 
   
   
       7 . A method of reducing lipoxygenase activity, cyclooxygenase activity, tumor necrosis factor-alpha activity, matrix metalloproteinase enzyme activity, or oxidative damage in a skin cell comprising contacting the skin cell with an aromatic skin-active ingredient, wherein contacting the skin cell with the aromatic ingredient reduces lipoxygenase activity, cyclooxygenase activity, tumor necrosis factor-alpha activity, matrix metalloproteinase enzyme activity, or oxidative damage in the skin cell. 
   
   
       8 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the skin cell is selected from the group consisting of human epidermal keratinocytes, human dermal fibroblasts, and human melanocytes.

       10 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the skin cell is contacted with at least two, three, four, five, six, or seven aromatic skin-active ingredients. 
   
   
       11 . The method of  claim 7 , wherein the aromatic skin-active ingredient is comprised in a composition. 
   
   
       12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the composition is an emulsion, a cream, a lotion, a solution, an anhydrous base, a gel, or an ointment.

       39 . A topical skin-care composition comprising an effective amount of an aromatic skin-active ingredient. 
   
   
       40 . The topical skin-care composition of  claim 39 , wherein an effective amount is 0.005% to 2.0% by weight of the composition. 
   
   
       41 . The topical skin-care composition of  claim 39 , wherein the composition is fragrance free. 
   
   
       42 . The topical skin-care composition of  claim 41 , wherein the composition does not include another aromatic compound.

       46 . The topical skin-care composition of  claim 39 , wherein the composition does not include another skin-active ingredient. 
   
   
       47 . The topical skin-care composition of  claim 46 , wherein the composition does not include another aromatic compound.
