Abstract

A practice bat is provided for assisting batters to learn proper mechanics for hitting a thrown ball with the bat including an elongated flat member having a flat handle portion at one end and a flat generally paddle-like portion at its other end. A circular opening is formed in the paddle-like portion which has a diameter larger than the ball being thrown to the batter. The batter swings at the thrown ball and attempts to have the thrown ball pass through the circular opening which will indicate to the batter that he/she has executed a proper swing.

1 . A practice bat for assisting batters to learn proper mechanics for hitting a thrown ball, comprising:
 an elongated flat member having a flat handle portion at one end and a flat generally paddle-like portion at its other end;   and a circular opening formed in said paddle-like portion which has a diameter larger than the ball being thrown to the batter.   
   
   
       2 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein said flat handle portion has a transverse rectangular cross-section. 
   
   
       3 . The practice bat of  claim 2  wherein said handle portion has first and second opposing flat faces, said first face adapted to have the palm of one of the batter's hands positioned thereagainst in a flush manner and wherein said second face is adapted to have the palm of the other of the batter's hands positioned thereagainst in a flush manner. 
   
   
       4 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein said flat handle portion has an enlarged portion at the end thereof. 
   
   
       5 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein said flat member has a thickness of approximately ¾ inch. 
   
   
       6 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein the diameter of said circular opening is approximately 3 inches. 
   
   
       7 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein the diameter of said circular opening is greater than the diameter of an official baseball. 
   
   
       8 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein the diameter of said circular opening is greater than the diameter of an official softball. 
   
   
       9 . The practice bat of  claim 2  wherein said handle portion has first and second opposing flat faces, at least one of said opposing faces adapted to have the palm of one of the batter's hands positioned thereagainst in a flush manner. 
   
   
       10 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein said flat member is comprised of an aluminum material. 
   
   
       11 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein said flat member is comprised of a wooden material. 
   
   
       12 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein said flat member is comprised of a plastic material. 
   
   
       13 . The practice bat of  claim 1  wherein said flat member is comprised of a fiberglass material.
