Abstract

Disclosed herein is an article having: coalesced first and second glasses, wherein: the first glass has at least two different metal oxides, wherein the first glass has a T g1 and T x1 , and wherein the difference between the T g1 and the T x1 is at least 5K, the first glass having less than 20% by weight SiO 2 , less than 20% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 40% by weight P 2 O 5 ; and the second glass has at least two different metal oxides, wherein the second glass has a T g2 and T x2 , and wherein the difference between the T g2 and the T x2 is at least 5K, the second glass having less than 20% by weight SiO 2 , less than 20% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 40% by weight P 2 O 5 .

1 . An article comprising:
 coalesced first and second glasses, wherein:   the first glass comprises at least two different metal oxides, wherein the first glass has a T g1  and T x1 , and wherein the difference between the T g1  and the T x1  is at least 5K, the first glass comprising less than 20% by weight SiO 2 , less than 20% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 40% by weight P 2 O 5 ; and   the second glass comprises at least two different metal oxides, wherein the second glass has a T g2  and T x2 , and wherein the difference between the T g2  and the T x2  is at least 5K, the second glass comprising less than 20% by weight SiO 2 , less than 20% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 40% by weight P 2 O 5 .   
     
     
         2 . The article of  claim 1  wherein:
 the first glass comprises less than 10% by weight SiO 2 , less than 10% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 5% by weight P 2 O 5 ; and   the second glass comprises less than 10% by weight SiO 2 , less than 10% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 5% by weight P 2 O 5 .   
     
     
         3 . The article of  claim 1  wherein the first and second glasses have the same composition. 
     
     
         4 . The article of  claim 1  wherein the first and second glasses have different compositions. 
     
     
         5 . The article of  claim 1  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises less than 40 percent by weight collectively SiO 2 , B 2 O 3 , and P 2 O 5 , based on the total weight of the glass. 
     
     
         6 . The article of  claim 1  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises La 2 O 3 —TiO 2  glass. 
     
     
         7 . The article of  claim 1  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises REO—Al 2 O 3  glass. 
     
     
         8 . The article of  claim 1  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises REO—Al 2 O 3 —ZrO 2  glass. 
     
     
         9 . The article of  claim 1  wherein the difference between the T g1  and the T x1  is at least 35K. 
     
     
         10 . The article of  claim 1  wherein the article comprises a glass. 
     
     
         11 . The article of  claim 1  wherein the article comprises a glass-ceramic. 
     
     
         12 . A method of making an article, comprising:
 providing a first glass comprising at least two different metal oxides, wherein the first glass has a T g1  and T x1 , and wherein the difference between the T g1  and the T x1  is at least 5K, the first glass containing less than 20% by weight SiO 2 , less than 20% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 40% by weight P 2 O 5 ; and   providing a second glass comprising at least two different metal oxides, wherein the second glass has a T g2  and T x2 , and wherein the difference between the T g2  and the T x2  is at least 5K, the second glass containing less than 20% by weight SiO 2 , less than 20% by weight B 2 O 3 , and less than 40% by weight P 2 O 5 ; and   heating the first and second glasses above the higher of T g1  and T g2  to coalesce the first and second glasses.   
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the first and second glasses have the same composition. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the first and second glasses have different compositions. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 12  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises less than 40 percent by weight collectively SiO 2 , B 2 O 3 , and P 2 O 5 , based on the total weight of the glass. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 12  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises La 2 O 3 —TiO 2  glass. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 12  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises REO—Al 2 O 3  glass. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 12  wherein at least one of the first and second glasses comprises REO—Al 2 O 3 —ZrO 2  glass. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the difference between the T g1  and the T x1  is at least 35K. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the article comprises a glass. 
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the article comprises a glass-ceramic.
