Abstract

The invention relates to a protective knit glove and methods of manufacturing thereof. The protective knit glove includes a knit glove shell having inner and outer surfaces; and a plurality of discrete rigid plates separated from each other by gaps of approximately 5 to 40 mils and directly adhered to the inner and/or outer surfaces. One or more rubbery layers may be directly adhered to one or more of the rigid plates. Preferably, the knit glove shell may be constructed from polyamide, cotton and polyurethane, polyaramid, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, or glass fiber. Preferably, the discrete rigid plates may be made from epoxy and the rubbery layer may be made from nitrile rubber, polyurethane rubber, PVC rubber, or natural rubber. The protective knit glove provides a higher level of cut protection, added puncture protection and enhanced abrasion resistance compared to a glove without the discrete rigid plates.

1 . A protective knit glove comprising:
 a knit glove shell having inner and outer surfaces;   a plurality of rigid plates separated from each other by gaps and directly adhered to the inner and/or outer surfaces; and   one or more rubbery members directly adhered to the rigid plates and/or the inner or outer surfaces of the knit glove shell.   
   
   
       2 . The protective knit glove of  claim 1 , wherein the plates and the rubbery members are layers. 
   
   
       3 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the plates have a thickness in the range of approximately 5 to 40 mils. 
   
   
       4 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the size of the gaps is in the range of approximately 5 to 20 mils.

       9 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the knit glove shell is constructed from glass fiber. 
   
   
       10 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the plurality of discrete rigid plates are constructed from an epoxy. 
   
   
       11 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the rubbery member is constructed from nitrile rubber. 
   
   
       12 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the rubbery member is constructed from polyurethane. 
   
   
       13 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the rubbery member is constructed from PVC. 
   
   
       14 . The protective glove of  claim 1 , wherein the rubbery member is constructed from natural rubber. 
   
   
       15 . A protective knit glove comprising:
 a knit glove shell having inner and outer surfaces; and   a plurality of rigid plates directly adhered to the inner and outer surface of the knit glove.   
   
   
       16 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , wherein the plates have a thickness in the range of approximately 5 to 40 mils. 
   
   
       17 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , wherein the plates are separated by a gap size of approximately 5 to 20 mils. 
   
   
       18 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from a polyamide. 
   
   
       19 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from cotton and polyurethane. 
   
   
       20 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from a polyaramid. 
   
   
       21 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. 
   
   
       22 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from glass fiber. 
   
   
       23 . The protective glove of  claim 15 , in which a rubbery member is adhered to and covers an area of the shell, but is not adhered to or covering the plates. 
   
   
       24 . A method of making a protective knit glove comprising:
 providing a knit glove shell having a surface, and   adhering rigid plates to the surface of the knit glove shell, wherein the rigid plates are substantially uniform in thickness.   
   
   
       25 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the rigid plates are adhered by flat screen printing, and further comprising curing rigid plates into a three-dimensional shape. 
   
   
       26 . The method of  claim 24 , further comprising adhering one or more rubbery members to one or more of the rigid plates. 
   
   
       27 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the substantially uniform thickness is approximately 5 to 40 mils. 
   
   
       28 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the rigid plates are separated from each other by a substantially uniform gap size of approximately 5 to 20 mils. 
   
   
       29 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from a polyamide. 
   
   
       30 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from cotton and polyurethane. 
   
   
       31 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from a polyaramid. 
   
   
       32 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. 
   
   
       33 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the knit glove is constructed from glass fiber. 
   
   
       34 . The method of  claim 24 , wherein the knit glove is cured fully or partially on a special shaped former to provide a desired shape or curvature. 
   
   
       35 . The method of  claim 24 , further comprising providing a three-dimensional mold; inserting the mold into the knit glove shell; and applying a rubbery layer on the rigid plates. 
   
   
       36 . The method of  claim 24 , further comprising providing a three-dimensional mold; and inserting the mold into the knit glove shell before adhering the one or more rubbery members to one or more of the rigid plates.
