System and methods for using an application layer control protocol transporting spatial location information pertaining to devices connected to wired and wireless internet protocol networks
Abstract
Application layer signaling is provided from users registering at a presence server for a presence service wherein upon reception the signaling is checked for spatial location information and stored for future use in providing the presence service in association with other user information, such as user identity. The application layer signaling may be in accordance with the session initiation protocol (SIP) and the spatial location information provided as a spatial location payload (SLoP). The presence service may provide access to the spatial location information to one or more location based services either openly or confidentially by hiding the user's identity and other information. The spatial location information may also be used in conjunction with a messaging service for providing messages to the users with enhanced functionality.

A presence server, comprising: a processor, configured to register a plurality of users to a presence service in response to a corresponding plurality of register requests from the plurality of users, wherein a register request includes information relating to a communication state of a user; a data storage, configured to store communication states of the registered users; and a communication interface, configured to receive an invitation message from an inviting user registered to said presence service to exchange content with an invited user registered to said presence service, and to provide a presence query in response to said invitation message for obtaining an updated communications state of said invited user; wherein said processor is further configured to determine, based on said updated communications state of said invited user, whether said content should be sent to said invited user, stored or refused, wherein said communications state pertains to a spatial location of the user, said register request, said presence query and said invitation message are communicated according to a session initiation protocol, and wherein said spatial location is contained in said register request as a spatial location payload.
