Abstract

There are provided oligoarylene derivatives capable of emitting blue light at high luminous efficiency which are represented by the following general formulae (1) to (4): Ar 1 —Ch—Ar 2   (1) Ch 1 -L-Ch 2   (2) Ar 3 -(L 1 ) a -Ch 3 -(L 2 ) b -Ar 4   (3) Ar 5 —Ch 4 —(Ar 7 ) n -L 3 -(Ar 8 ) m —Ch 5 —Ar 6   (4) wherein Ch, Ch 1 and Ch 2 are respectively a group containing at least one substituted or unsubstituted condensed aromatic ring having 14 to 20 nuclear atoms; Ch 3 , Ch 4 and Ch 5 are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group having 14 to 20 nuclear atoms; Ar 1 , Ar 2 , Ar 3 , Ar 4 , Ar 5 and Ar 6 are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 5 to 30 nuclear atoms; Ar 7 and Ar 8 are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group having 5 to 30 nuclear atoms; L 1 , L 2 and L 3 are respectively a connecting group; and a, b, n and m are respectively an integer of 0 to 1, as well as organic electroluminescent devices using the same.

       2 . A luminescent material for organic electroluminescent devices comprising an oligoarylene derivative represented by the following general formula (3) or (4):
   Ar 3 -(L 1 ) a -Ch 3 -(L 2 ) b -Ar 4   (3)   
     wherein Ch 3  is a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group having 14 to 20 nuclear carbon atoms, provided that the arylene group is not anthracenylene;
 L 1  and L 2  are respectively a connecting group and may be the same or different from each other; a and b are respectively an integer of 0 to 1; and 
 Ar 3  and Ar 4  are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 5 to 30 nuclear atoms and may be the same or different from each other with the proviso that when Ch 3  is a substituted or unsubstituted pyrene residue and a and b are zero, Ar 3  and/or Ar 4  are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted β-naphthyl derivative, with the proviso that the oligoarylene derivative is not anyone of compounds CH2, CH3, CH4, CH11, CH13, CH14, CH16, CH17, CH18, CH19CH20, CH21, CH22, CH23, and CH24:

       4 . The luminescent material for organic electroluminescent devices comprising the oligoarylene derivative according to  claim 2 , wherein the arylene group in Ch 3  of the general formula (3) is a divalent residue selected from the group consisting of phenanthrene, pyrene, chrysene, triphenylene and perylene.

An organic electroluminescent device comprising a cathode, an anode and an organic thin film layer sandwiched between the cathode and the anode which is constituted of a single layer or a plurality of layers including at least one luminescent layer, wherein at least one layer of the organic thin film layer contains the luminescent material for organic electroluminescent devices comprising the oligoarylene derivative as claimed in  claim 2  as a single component or a component of a mixture. 
   
   
       8 . The organic electroluminescent device according to  claim 7 , wherein the luminescent layer contains the luminescent material for organic electroluminescent devices comprising the oligoarylene derivative. 
   
   
       9 . The organic electroluminescent device according to  claim 7 , wherein the luminescent layer consists essentially of the luminescent material for organic electroluminescent devices comprising the oligoarylene derivative. 
   
   
       10 . The organic electroluminescent device according to  claim 7 , wherein the luminescent layer further contains an arylamine compound. 
   
   
       11 . The organic electroluminescent device according to  claim 7 , wherein the luminescent layer further contains an styrylamine compound.

       14 . The organic electroluminescent device according to  claim 7 , wherein the organic electroluminescent device emits a blue light. 
   
   
       15 . The luminescent material for organic electroluminescent devices comprising the oligoarylene derivative according to  claim 2 , wherein Ar 3  and/or Ar 4  are selected from the group consisting of aryl, alkyl, cycloalkyl, and aromatic heterocyclic groups. 
   
   
       16 . The luminescent material for organic electroluminescent devices comprising the oligoarylene derivative according to  claim 2 , wherein Ch 3  is a residue of chrysene. 
   
   
       17 . The organic electroluminescent device according to  claim 10 , wherein the arylamine compound is represented by the following general formula (B): 
     
       
         
         
             
             
         
       
       wherein Ar 12  to Ar 14  are respectively a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group having 5 to 40 nuclear carbon atoms; and d is an integer of 1 to 4. 
     
   
   
       18 . The organic electroluminescent device according to  claim 11 , wherein the styrylamine compound is represented by the following general formula (A): 
     
       
         
         
             
             
         
       
       wherein Ar 9  is a group selected from the group consisting of phenyl, biphenyl, terphenyl, stilbene and distyrylaryl; Ar 10  and Ar 11  are respectively a hydrogen atom or a C 6  to C 20  aromatic group; Ar 9 , Ar 10  and Ar 11  may be substituted; c is an integer of 1 to 4; and at least one of Ar 10  and Ar 11  is substituted with styryl.
