Abstract

Novel alterations in the glycerol kinase gene are described. Also described are methods of predicting or assisting in the prediction of impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

An isolated nucleic acid molecule comprising a portion of SEQ ID NO: 3, wherein said portion is at least 10 nucleotides in length and includes nucleotide position 29 of exon 10 of a glycerol kinase (GK) gene, and wherein said nucleic acid molecule comprises a mutant allele of said GK gene at said nucleotide position 29.
