Leak-proofing gussets on multi-wall paper and woven polypropylene packages or bags

Abstract

Reclosable gusseted packages or bags have improved resistance to leaking or spilling through the gussets by way of glue or adhesive applied in the gussets in the areas proximate to the reclosable zipper of the bag. This can be done by applying a glue smear to the interior and exterior of the gusset walls; applying glue dots between the exterior facing walls of the gussets; or by applying the glue smear between the exterior facing walls of the gussets.

1 . A reclosable package or bag comprising:
 a first wall and a second wall;   a first gusset formed between a first edge of the first wall and a first edge of the second wall;   a second gusset formed between a second edge of the first wall and a second edge of the second wall;   a mouth formed between a top edge of the first sheet and a top edge of the second sheet;   a reclosable zipper secured to the first and second walls proximate the mouth; and   glue or adhesive applied to the first gusset and to the second gusset to minimize leakage through the first and second gussets.   
   
   
       2 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 1  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied to the first gusset and the second gusset in at least an area proximate to the reclosable zipper. 
   
   
       3 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 2  wherein the first gusset and the second gusset each include a first gusset wall and a second gusset wall. 
   
   
       4 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 3  wherein each first gusset wall and respective second gusset wall form an inwardly pointing V-shape. 
   
   
       5 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 4  wherein the first gusset walls and the second gusset walls are formed of a same material as the first wall and the second wall. 
   
   
       6 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 5  wherein the first gusset walls and the second gusset walls are formed integrally with the first wall and the second wall. 
   
   
       7 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 4  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied onto an interior and an exterior of a portion of the first and second gusset walls. 
   
   
       8 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 4  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied onto an exterior of a portion of the first and second gusset walls and interior of the first and second gusset walls is substantially free of the glue or adhesive. 
   
   
       9 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 8  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied as a series of dots. 
   
   
       10 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 1  wherein the reclosable zipper includes a first profile attached to the first wall, a second profile attached to the second wall, and a slider to interlock the first and second profiles when moved in a first direction and to separate the first and second profiles when moved in a second direction. 
   
   
       11 . A reclosable package or bag comprising:
 a wall structure with a top mouth and a closed bottom;   at least one gusset formed in the wall structure;   a reclosable zipper secured to the wall structure proximate the mouth; and   glue or adhesive applied to the at least one gusset to minimize leakage through the first and second gussets.   
   
   
       12 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 11  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied to the at least one gusset in at least an area proximate to the reclosable zipper. 
   
   
       13 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 12  wherein the at least one gusset includes a first gusset wall and a second gusset wall. 
   
   
       14 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 13  wherein the first gusset wall and the second gusset wall form an inwardly pointing V-shape. 
   
   
       15 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 14  wherein the first gusset wall and the second gusset wall are formed of a same material as the wall structure. 
   
   
       16 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 15  wherein the first gusset wall and the second gusset wall are formed integrally with the wall structure. 
   
   
       17 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 14  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied onto an interior and an exterior of a portion of the first and second gusset walls. 
   
   
       18 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 14  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied onto an exterior of a portion of the first and second gusset walls and interior of the first and second gusset walls is substantially free of the glue or adhesive. 
   
   
       19 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 18  wherein the glue or adhesive is applied as a series of dots. 
   
   
       20 . The reclosable package or bag of  claim 11  wherein the reclosable zipper includes a first profile and a second profile attached to the wall structure, and a slider to interlock the first and second profiles when moved in a first direction and to separate the first and second profiles when moved in a second direction.
