Abstract

A pump comprises a vertical pumping tube fitted with a check valve supported against gravity and held in tension by extension springs; a lower spring stretched between the pumping tube and a dead weight; an upper spring stretched between the pumping tube and a rigid frame; a scotch yoke, escapement, or other device that imparts motion to the pumping tube to cause filling, lifting, and draining of the pumping tube so as to pump water or other fluids from a well or body of water.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A pump comprising a vertical pumping tube means fitted with a check valve means and full of water supported against gravity and held in tension by extension springs means; a lower spring means stretched between the pumping tube means and a dead weight means; an upper spring means stretched between the pumping tube means and a rigid frame means; a scotch yoke means imparting harmonic motion to the pumping tube means to cause filling, lifting, and draining of the pumping tube means so as to pump water or other fluids from a well or body of water.

2 . A pump according to claim 1 wherein the scotch yoke means imparts harmonic motion to the pump tube means at the free vibration frequency of the pumping tube means.

3 . A pump according to claim 1 wherein the pumping tube is freely vibrating and the scotch yoke means is replaced by a escapement means that maintains a constant amplitude of the vibration of the pumping tube means.

4 . A pump according to claim 1 wherein the scotch yoke means is replaced by another mechanical device and motion of the pumping tube means is not harmonic.

5 . A pump according to claims 1 , 2 , 3 , and 4 wherein the pumping tube means and extension spring means are not vertical.
