Abstract

A method is provided for attenuating sound transmitted through a building structure. The method includes marketing an insulation product for installation in a cavity in the building structure wherein the insulation product has a thickness T greater than the depth D of the cavity. The insulation product is then compressed between the first and second covering members or materials. The insulation product produces a sound damping force upon the covering material.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A method of attenuating sound transmitted through a building structure wherein said building structure includes a frame that supports a first covering material and a second covering material, a cavity being formed between said frame, said first covering material and said second covering material, said cavity having a depth D, a width W 1 and a length L 1 , said method comprising:
marketing an insulation product for installation in said cavity wherein said insulation product has a thickness T greater than the depth D of said cavity whereby when said insulation product is compressed between said first covering material and said second covering material, said insulation product produces a sound damping force upon said first covering material and said second covering material.

2 . The method of claim 1 further including providing said insulation product with a width W 2 less than said width W 1 of said cavity.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further including providing said insulation product with a length L 2 less than said length L 1 , of said cavity.

       4 . The method of  claim 1 , further including providing said insulation product with one of;
 (a.) a width W 2 less than said width W 1 of said cavity; (b.) a length L 2 less than said length L 1 , of said cavity; and (c.) a width W 2 less than said width W 1 of said cavity and a length L 2 less than said length L 1 of said cavity.

5 . The method of claim 4 , including providing said insulation product with a batt of insulation material and a facing.

6 . The method of claim 5 , including providing adhesive on said facing to allow said insulation product to be temporarily held in said cavity until said cavity is closed by said first covering material and said second covering material.

7 . A method of insulating a wall section made from framing members, a first covering material and a second covering material wherein said framing members define a wall cavity having a length L 1 , width W 1 and a depth D, said method comprising:
placing an insulation product in said wall cavity having a thickness T greater than said depth D; saving material used to make said insulation product by providing said insulation product with (a) a length L 2 less than said length L 1 , (b) a width W 2 less than said width W 1 or (c) a length L 2 less than said length L 1 and a width W 2 less than said width W 1 ; and compressing said insulation product in said wall cavity between said first and second covering materials.

8 . The method of claim 7 further including temporarily securing said insulation product to one of said framing members before compressing said insulation product between said first and second covering.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein said flaming members include a top plate a bottom plate, a first stud and a second stud and said method includes securing said product to said top plate.

10 . The method of claim 9 , including pinning said insulation product to said top plate.

11 . The method of claim 9 , including adhering said insulation product to said top plate.

12 . The method of claim 9 , including stapling said insulation product to said top plate.

13 . The method of claim 7 , further including temporarily securing said insulation product to said first covering material before installing said second covering material and compressing said insulation product.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein said securing step includes adhering said insulation product to said first covering material.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein said securing step includes fastening said insulation product to said first covering material with a fastener.
