Abstract

Described herein are coatings containing water-soluble oligodynamic metal salts that are formulated and applied from hydrophobic solvents. In particular, articles of manufacture comprising polymer coatings containing oligodynamic metal salts can include hydrophilic polymer coatings made from water-reactive monomers and hydrophilic polymers compounded in hydrophobic solvents which contain a small amount of water that aids in the solubilization and suspension of the oligodynamic metal salts. Methods of preparing these antimicrobial polymer coatings, and methods of coating a substrate to produce an article of manufacture having an antimicrobial polymer coating are also described

         25 . A method of making an article comprising a base coat and a top coat, the method comprising providing an article having a substrate, applying a base coat composition to the substrate to obtain an article at least partially coated with a base coat, and applying a top coat composition to the article to at least partially coat the base coat, wherein the top coat composition comprises a polyurethane, polyurethane-urea-silane copolymer other than the polyurethane, and at least one oligodynamic metal compound. 
     
     
         26 . The method according to  claim 25 , wherein the polyurethane is chosen from polyether polyurethanes, polyester polyurethanes, polyurethaneureas, or their copolymers. 
     
     
         27 . The method according to  claim 25 , wherein the polyurethane-urea-silane copolymer has 7-12% by weight silane based on the weight of the entire copolymer. 
     
     
         28 . The method according to  claim 25 , wherein the oligodynamic metal compound includes at least one oligodynamic metal compound in colloid form. 
     
     
         29 . The method according to  claim 28 , wherein the oligodynamic metal compound in colloid form comprises colloidal silver chloride. 
     
     
         30 . The method according to  claim 29 , wherein the top coat composition further comprises an oligodynamic metal compound comprising silver nitrate. 
     
     
         31 . The method according to  claim 26 , wherein the polyurethane-urea-silane copolymer has 7-12% by weight silane based on the weight of the entire copolymer, and the oligodynamic metal compound comprises silver nitrate and colloidal silver chloride.
