Abstract
A method and composition for removing sulfur from molten ferrous material, particularly molten iron. The desulfurization agent includes one or more pucks or briquettes of deoxidizing and/or desulfurization agent. The pucks or briquettes of deoxidizing and/or desulfurization agent include at least one deoxidizing metal and at least one ferrous metal.

A desulfurization agent for removing oxygen and/or sulfur from molten iron including at least one ferrous material and at least one deoxidizing metal formed into a puck or briquette said puck or briquette having an average density of at least about 6.9 g/cm 3 .
2 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 1 , wherein said ferrous material includes carbon steel, stainless steel, or mixtures thereof, and said deoxidizing metal includes aluminum, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, or mixtures thereof.
3 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 1 , wherein a total weight percent of said ferrous material is greater than a total weight percent of said deoxidizing metal in said puck or briquette.
4 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 2 , wherein a total weight percent of said ferrous material is greater than a total weight percent of said deoxidizing metal in said puck or briquette.
5 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 1 , wherein said deoxidizing metal includes reclaimed deoxidizing metal.
6 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 4 , wherein said deoxidizing metal includes reclaimed deoxidizing metal.
7 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 1 , wherein said ferrous metal includes reclaimed ferrous metal.
8 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 6 , wherein said ferrous metal includes reclaimed ferrous metal.
9 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 1 , including a liquid, said liquid content of said puck or briquette about 0.001-5 weight percent.
10 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 8 , including a liquid, said liquid content of said puck or briquette about 0.001-5 weight percent.
11 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 9 , wherein said liquid includes water, hydrocarbon compound, or mixtures thereof.
12 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 1 , including a calcium compound, said calcium compound content of said puck or briquette about 0.1-20 weight percent.
13 . The desulfurization agent as defined in claim 11 , including a calcium compound, said calcium compound content of said puck or briquette about 0.1-20 weight percent.
14 . A method for forming a deoxidizing and/or desulfurization agent comprising:
selecting at least one ferrous material; selecting at least one deoxidizing metal; compressing said at least one ferrous material and at least one deoxidizing metal into a puck or briquette having a density of at least about 6.9 g/cm 3 .
15 . The method as defined in claim 14 , wherein said ferrous material includes carbon steel, stainless steel, or mixtures thereof, and said deoxidizing metal includes aluminum, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, or mixtures thereof.
16 . The method as defined in claim 14 , wherein a total weight percent of said ferrous material is greater than a total weight percent of said deoxidizing metal in said puck or said briquette.
17 . The method as defined in claim 15 , wherein a total weight percent of said ferrous material is greater than a total weight percent of said deoxidizing metal in said puck or said briquette.
18 . The method as defined in claim 14 , wherein said deoxidizing metal includes reclaimed deoxidizing metal.
19 . The method as defined in claim 17 , wherein said deoxidizing metal includes reclaimed deoxidizing metal.
20 . The method as defined in claim 14 , wherein said ferrous metal includes reclaimed ferrous metal.
21 . The method as defined in claim 19 , wherein said ferrous metal includes reclaimed ferrous metal.
22 . A method for deoxidizing and/or desulfurizing molten iron which comprises adding to said molten iron a desulfurization agent, said desulfurization agent including at least one ferrous material and at least one deoxidizing metal formed into a puck or briquette said puck or briquette having an average density of at least about 6.9 g/cm 3 .
23 . The method as defined in claim 22 , wherein said ferrous material includes carbon steel, stainless steel, or mixtures thereof, and said deoxidizing metal includes aluminum, magnesium, titanium, zirconium, or mixtures thereof.
24 . The method as defined in claim 22 , wherein a total weight percent of said ferrous material is greater than a total weight percent of said deoxidizing metal in said puck or said briquette.
25 . The method as defined in claim 23 , wherein a total weight percent of said ferrous material is greater than a total weight percent of said deoxidizing metal in said puck or said briquette.
26 . The method as defined in claim 22 , wherein said deoxidizing metal includes reclaimed deoxidizing metal.
27 . The method as defined in claim 25 , wherein said deoxidizing metal includes reclaimed deoxidizing metal.
28 . The method as defined in claim 22 , wherein said ferrous metal includes reclaimed ferrous metal.
