Abstract
A perforating gun loading bay is described for protecting adjacent areas from an accidental explosion during gun loading. The bay can be an insert-type arrangement or a stand-alone structure. The bay includes metal plate walls, a floor and a roof.

A perforating gun loading bay including a floor, a roof and walls, the floor being substantially planar to form a work area and the floor, the walls and the roof enclosing an internal area sized to accommodate an adult person in an upright position fully therein and each of the floor, the walls and the roof including an outer material layer of steel and an inner material layer of steel selected to be blast resistant to minimize the trajectory therepast of explosive debris generated from detonation of explosives handled in a perforating gun loading operation and at least a portion of the inner material layer of steel including an inner liner of shock absorbing material mounted thereon and exposed to the internal area.
2 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 further comprising a skid for supporting the floor, roof and walls.
3 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 further comprising a perforating gun loading area on the floor and the loading area is positioned to limit the trajectory of debris outwardly through openings in the bay walls.

6 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , wherein the walls and the roof are formed to provide shock absorption.

8 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , wherein the walls and roof are formed with interior voids fillable with shock absorbing materials.
9 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , further comprising a vent for release of energy generated by an explosion.

11 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , further comprising a roof vent for release of energy generated by an explosion.
12 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 11 , wherein the roof vent is selected to permit passage of explosion energy therethrough without itself generating shrapnel debris.

15 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , formed as a magazine including an access doorway through a selected wall and an impact resistant, lockable door thereover.

17 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 16 wherein the second door is lockable to restrict entry into the bay, when the impact resistant door is unlocked.
18 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 15 , further comprising a gun loading area on the floor, the gun loading area situated such that the explosive path of the gun is out of line with the doorway.
19 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , wherein the bay is selected to be securable to act as an explosives magazine.
20 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , wherein the walls are resistant to the passage of bullets therethrough.
21 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , further comprising a gun loading area on the floor, the gun loading area situated such that the explosive path of the gun is out of line with any doorways in the walls.
22 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 , further comprising a gun loading area on the floor, the gun loading area situated such that the explosive path of the gun is out of line with any explosive storage areas in the bay.

29 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 16 , wherein the lockable door and the second door are installed to open outwardly away from the internal area.

The perforating gun loading bay of claim 15 , wherein the walls include a first wall, a second wall connected at a first corner to the first wall and a third wall connected at a second corner to the second wall and wherein the access doorway is installed in the second wall at a position closer to the first corner than to the second corner such that the doorway is offset from a center floor area positioned between the first wall and the second wall.
31 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 14 , wherein the roof includes a peak extending therealong including a roof ridge seam and the roof ridge seam forms the weak point along the roof.
32 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 1 further comprising a work bench installed on the floor defining a perforating gun loading area.

A perforating gun loading bay comprising: a floor, a roof and walls, the floor being substantially planar to form a work area and the floor, the walls and the roof enclosing an internal area sized to accommodate an adult person in an upright position fully therein and each of the floor, the walls and the roof including an outer material layer of steel selected to be blast resistant to minimize the trajectory therepast of explosive debris generated from detonation of explosives handled in a perforating gun loading operation, wherein the perforating gun loading bay is formed as a magazine including an access doorway through a selected one of the walls and the doorway having installed therein an impact resistant, lockable door and a second door in the doorway, the second door including a quick opening mechanism.
34 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 33 wherein the second door is lockable to restrict entry into the bay, when the impact resistant door is unlocked.
35 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 33 , further comprising a gun loading area on the floor, the gun loading area situated such that the explosive path of the gun is out of line with the doorway.
36 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 33 , wherein the lockable door and the second door are installed to open outwardly away from the internal area.

The perforating gun loading bay of claim 33 , wherein the walls include a first wall, a second wall connected at a first corner to the first wall and a third wall connected at a second corner to the second wall and wherein the access doorway is installed in the second wall at a position closer to the first corner than to the second corner such that the doorway is offset from a center floor area positioned between the first wall and the second wall.
38 . A perforating gun loading bay comprising: a floor, a roof and walls, the floor being substantially planar to form a work area and the floor, the walls and the roof enclosing an internal area sized to accommodate an adult person in an upright position fully therein and each of the floor, the walls and the roof including an outer material layer of steel selected to be blast resistant to minimize the trajectory therepast of explosive debris generated from detonation of explosives handled in a perforating gun loading operation; a work bench installed on the floor defining a perforating gun loading area; and a pipe supply rack installed in the internal area.
39 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 38 further comprising a loaded gun storage rack installed in the internal area.

The perforating gun loading bay of claim 38 , wherein the walls include a first wall, a second wall connected at a first corner to the first wall and a third wall connected at a second corner to the second wall and further comprising a doorway installed in the second wall and wherein the work bench includes a first end, a second end and a long axis defined as extending from the first end to the second end and the work bench is installed in a position with its axis offset from the position of the doorway.
41 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 40 wherein the doorway is at a position closer to the first corner than to the second corner.
42 . A perforating gun loading bay comprising: a floor, a roof and walls, the floor being substantially planar to form a work area and the floor, the walls and the roof enclosing an internal area sized to accommodate an adult person in an upright position fully therein and each of the floor, the walls and the roof including an outer material layer of steel selected to be blast resistant to minimize trajectory therepast of explosive debris generated from detonation of explosives handled in a perforating gun loading operation; a work bench installed on the floor defining a perforating gun loading area; and a loaded gun storage rack installed in the internal area.
43 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 42 further comprising a pipe supply rack installed in the internal area.

The perforating gun loading bay of claim 42 , wherein the walls include a first wall, a second wall connected at a first corner to the first wall and a third wall connected at a second corner to the second wall and further comprising a doorway installed in the second wall and wherein the work bench includes a first end, a second end and a long axis defined as extending from the first end to the second end and the work bench being installed in a position with its axis offset from the position of the doorway.
45 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 44 wherein the doorway is at a position closer to the first corner than to the second corner.
46 . A perforating gun loading bay comprising: a floor, a roof and walls, the floor being substantially planar to form a work area and the floor, the walls and the roof enclosing an internal area sized to accommodate an adult person in an upright position fully therein and each of the floor, the walls and the roof including an outer material layer of steel selected to be blast resistant to minimize the trajectory therepast of explosive debris generated from detonation of explosives handled in a perforating gun loading operation; and a work bench installed on the floor defining a perforating gun loading area; and wherein the walls include a first wall, a second wall connected at a first corner to the first wall and a third wall connected at a second corner to the second wall and further comprising a doorway installed in the second wall and wherein the work bench includes a first end, a second end and a long axis defined as extending from the first end to the second end and the work bench being installed in a position with its axis offset from the position of the doorway.
47 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 46 further comprising a pipe supply rack installed in the internal area.
48 . The perforating gun loading bay of claim 46 further comprising a loaded gun storage rack installed in the internal area.
