Abstract

The present invention provides the use of carrageenan or mixtures thereof for the manufacture of an antiviral pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of rhinovirus infections.

1 . A method for the treatment or prophylaxis of a rhinovirus infection comprising administering to a subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising carrageenan. 
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the administration is topical or mucosal. 
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is in the form of a nose spray, powder, drop, or gargle solution. 
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation comprises a pharmaceutical carrier or additive. 
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation is further defined as comprising 0.01% and 20% carrageenan. 
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 5 , wherein the preparation is further defined as comprising 0.1% and 10% carrageenan. 
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the preparation is further defined as comprising 0.5% and 5% carrageenan. 
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation comprises at least two different antiviral components. 
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 8 , wherein one of the antiviral components is cellulose sulfate. 
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation is sterile. 
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 80% lambda-, kappa-, and/or iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 90% lambda-, kappa-, and/or iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 95% lambda-, kappa-, and/or iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 99% lambda-, kappa-, and/or iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 80% iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 15 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 90% iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 95% iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 17 , wherein the total carrageenan concentration in the preparation is comprised of at least 99% iota-carrageenan. 
     
     
         19 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation is further defined as comprising a lambda-carrageenan homopolymer. 
     
     
         20 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation is further defined as comprising a kappa-carrageenan homopolymer. 
     
     
         21 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation is further defined as comprising an iota-carrageenan homopolymer. 
     
     
         22 . The method of  claim 1 , further defined as a method for the treatment of a rhinovirus infection. 
     
     
         23 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein the rhinovirus infection is an acute or chronic rhinovirus infection. 
     
     
         24 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the preparation is further defined as comprising an agent for the treatment or prophylaxis of asthma. 
     
     
         25 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the subject is human. 
     
     
         26 . A hygiene or sanitation article comprising iota-, lambda- and/or kappa-carrageenan. 
     
     
         27 . The article of  claim 26 , further defined as comprising a homopolymer of iota-, lambda-, and/or kappa-carrageenan. 
     
     
         28 . The article of  claim 26 , further defined as a facial hygiene or sanitation article. 
     
     
         29 . The article of  claim 28 , further defined as a facial or sanitation article adapted for use in the oral and/or nasal area.
