Trim end cap assembly
Abstract
Typically, joints between sheets of laminate may be visible and form a dark or distinctly visible edge due to the color difference between the laminate surface and the interior material forming the laminate which interior material is visible when the laminate is cut. A trim assembly serves to hide this interior material while also forming corners that may be formed of a different material such as aluminum and thereby give a distinct unique appearance. The trim assembly includes an extruded rail, which receives a laminate insert, or includes a deeper extrusion having a thick insert with a finish surface applied thereto.

4 . The cabinet construction according to claim 3 , wherein said edge flanges of said mounting rail have inner flange faces in close facing relation with said insert side faces to cover from view, and outer flange faces defining said outer flange surfaces which are each exposed and lie uniformly flush on one flange edge with said insert outer face and on another flange edge with said opposite panel side faces.
5 . The cabinet construction according to claim 4 , wherein only said outer flange faces, said panel side faces and said insert outer face are visible from an exterior of said cabinet construction.
6 . The cabinet construction according to claim 5 , wherein said outer flange faces, said panel side faces and said insert outer face are oriented in angled relation one relative to the other.
7 . The cabinet construction according to claim 6 , wherein said insert outer face and said panel side faces are oriented at right angles relative to each other to define corners of said cabinet.
8 . The cabinet construction according to claim 6 , wherein said outer flange faces define a beveled shape at said corners.
9 . The cabinet construction according to claim 1 , wherein said mounting rail is formed of an extruded material, said insert includes a finish material defining said outer insert face which differs from said extruded material.
10 . The cabinet construction according to claim 9 , wherein said insert is defined by a single layer of sheet material.
11 . The cabinet construction according to claim 9 , wherein said insert is defined by a layer of insert sheet material mounted to a thicker substrate confined entirely within said channel beneath said insert sheet material.
12 . A cabinet construction comprising:
a cabinet panel having opposite major panel side faces and peripheral minor edge faces, said opposite panel side faces having a finished sheet layer defining an exterior finished appearance of said cabinet construction; a mounting rail extending along the length of at least one of said edge faces and having a width spanning said edge face so that said mounting rail is mounted in overlying relation with said edge face, said mounting rail having edge flanges projecting so as to define a recessed channel along the length of the mounting rail, said edge flanges having exposed outer flange faces which are exposed along cabinet corners defined along opposite said panel side faces, wherein said edge flanges of said mounting rail have lengthwise first and second edges wherein said first edge defines an inner flange face that defines a side face of said channel and said second edge terminates flush with said panel side face adjacent thereto such that said outer flange faces define an exterior finished appearance; and an insert member inserted into said channel, said insert member filling said channel and having an inner insert face lying against an opposing channel face, an outer insert face defining an exterior finished appearance of said cabinet construction, and side insert faces defining a thickness of said insert member between said inner and outer faces, each of said insert side faces having an unfinished appearance and being enclosed by said inner flange face disposed in contact therewith while said outer flange faces are exposed and bounded on opposite sides by said outer insert face and said panel side faces.
13 . The cabinet construction according to claim 12 , wherein said inner flange faces are in close facing relation with said insert side faces so as to cover from view.
14 . The cabinet construction according to claim 13 , wherein said outer flange faces are each exposed and lie uniformly flush on said first edge with said insert outer face and on said second edge with said opposite panel side faces.
15 . The cabinet construction according to claim 14 , wherein said respective exterior finished appearances of said outer insert face and said panel side faces differ from said finished appearance of said outer flange faces.
16 . The cabinet construction according to claim 14 , wherein said respective exterior finished appearances of said outer insert face and said panel side faces are defined by a sheet material and said finished appearance of said outer flange faces is defined by an extruded material.
17 . The cabinet construction according to claim 12 , wherein said insert is defined by a single layer of sheet material.
18 . The cabinet construction according to claim 12 , wherein said insert is defined by a layer of sheet material mounted to a thicker substrate confined entirely within said channel beneath said sheet material.
19 . A cabinet construction comprising:
a cabinet panel having opposite major panel side faces and peripheral minor edge faces, said opposite panel side faces having a finished sheet layer defining an exterior finished appearance of said cabinet construction; a mounting rail extending along the length of at least one of said edge faces and having a width spanning said edge face so that said mounting rail is mounted in overlying relation with said edge face, said mounting rail having edge flanges defining a recessed channel along the length of the mounting rail, said edge flanges having exposed outer flange faces which are exposed along cabinet corners defined along opposite said panel side faces, wherein said edge flanges of said mounting rail have lengthwise first and second edges wherein said first edge defines an inner flange face that defines a side face of said channel and said second edge terminates flush with said panel side face adjacent thereto such that said outer flange faces define an exterior finished appearance; and an insert member inserted into said channel which comprises a substrate and a sheet material, said insert member filling said channel and having an inner insert face defined by said substrate and lying against an opposing channel face, an outer insert face defined by said sheet material and defining an exterior finished appearance of said cabinet construction, and side insert faces defining a thickness of said insert member between said inner and outer faces, each of said insert side faces being enclosed by said inner flange face disposed in contact therewith while said outer flange faces are exposed and bounded on opposite sides by said outer insert face and said panel side faces.
