Abstract
Techniques are provided for conserving network resources in a network that initiates data services by communicating push data to a dormant terminal. Selected network resources associated with the dormant terminal are released, and maintained information for reaching the dormant terminal is updated when the point of network attachment of the dormant terminal changes.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A push data service method for a dormant terminal, the method comprising:
initiating a packet data session with an access provider network resulting in terminal profile information being forwarded to the access provider network and a wireless terminal address being received; ceasing data exchange over the packet data session to become dormant and releasing selected network resources; sending an origination message to establish an A10 connection with the access provider network in response to detection of a different radio access network; receiving a different wireless terminal address as the wireless terminal address if the different radio access network is part of an inter-PDSN handoff; and receiving push data from a PDSN that administers the wireless terminal address.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the push data comprises at least one of a terminal IP address and a terminal mobility binding.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the push data comprises a terminal IP address and a terminal mobility binding.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the dormant terminal is initially attached to the network at a first point of attachment that changes.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
establishing an A10 connection when the terminal powers on; authenticating the terminal, and if the authentication is successful, conveying terminal profile information; and receiving an IP address as the wireless terminal address.
6 . The method of claim 1 , when the terminal undergoes an intra-PDSN handoff, further comprising:
detecting a change when the dormant terminal moves to a different radio access network; establishing an A10 connection via A11 signaling that comprises a Previous Access Network ID, a Current Access Network ID, a terminal ID, and a terminal dormancy indication; determining, based on the terminal ID, that NRI for the terminal is present; and determining, based on the received Previous Access Network ID, that intra-PDSN handoff is occurring.
7 . The method of claim 6 , when the terminal undergoes an inter-PDSN handoff, further comprising:
detecting a change when the dormant terminal moves to another radio access network.
8 . The method of to claim 7 , further comprising:
establishing an A10 connection via A11 signaling that also includes Previous Access Network ID, Current Access Network ID, terminal ID, and terminal dormancy indication.
9 . A method for providing a push data service to a dormant terminal, comprising:
establishing an A10 connection to a PDSN in response to an origination message from a wireless terminal; detecting the wireless terminal becoming a dormant terminal and releasing selected network resources associated with the dormant terminal including terminating the A10 connection to the PDSN while assisting in maintaining terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal; receiving an origination message to establish an A10 connection with the PDSN in response to detection by the wireless terminal of a different servicing radio access network; assisting in updating the terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal when the point of network attachment of the dormant terminal changes; and forwarding push data from the PDSN that administers the wireless terminal address.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein releasing selected network resources associated with the dormant terminal, further comprises removing a PPP state.

The method of claim 9 , wherein the terminal profile information comprises NIDS Reachability Information (NRI) for the terminal that comprises an Access Network ID (ANID), and wherein assisting in updating the terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal when the point of network attachment of the dormant terminal changes, comprises:
assisting in updating the Access Network ID in the NRI with a Current Access Network ID and requesting release of the A10 connection for the terminal upon undergoing an intra-PDSN handoff.
12 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
pushing data to the terminal, wherein the push data comprises at least one of a terminal IP address and a terminal mobility binding.
13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the push data comprises a terminal IP address and a terminal mobility binding.
14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the dormant terminal is initially attached to the network at a first point of attachment that changes.
15 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
establishing an A10 connection when the terminal powers on; authenticating the terminal, and if the authentication is successful, conveying terminal profile information; and assisting in assigning an IP address to the terminal.
16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein removing a PPP state comprises:
removing a PPP state without sending Terminate-Request to the terminal.
17 . A dormant terminal in a push data service, comprising:
means for initiating a packet data session with an access provider network resulting in terminal profile information being forwarded to the access provider network and a wireless terminal address being received; means for ceasing data exchange over the packet data session to become dormant and releasing selected network resources; means for sending an origination message to establish an A10 connection with the access provider network in response to detection of a different radio access network; means for receiving a different wireless terminal address as the wireless terminal address if the different radio access network is part of an inter-PDSN handoff; and means for receiving push data from a PDSN that administers the wireless terminal address.
18 . The dormant terminal of claim 17 , wherein the push data comprises at least one of a terminal IP address and a terminal mobility binding.
19 . The dormant terminal of claim 17 , wherein the push data comprises a terminal IP address and a terminal mobility binding.
20 . The dormant terminal of claim 17 , wherein the dormant terminal is initially attached to the network at a first point of attachment that changes.
21 . The dormant terminal of claim 17 , further comprising:
means for establishing an A10 connection when the terminal powers on; means for authenticating the terminal, and if the authentication is successful, means for conveying terminal profile information; and means for receiving an IP address as the wireless terminal address.
22 . The dormant terminal of claim 17 , when the terminal undergoes an intra-PDSN handoff, further comprising:
means for detecting a change when the dormant terminal moves to a different radio access network; means for establishing an A10 connection via A11 signaling that comprises a Previous Access Network ID, a Current Access Network ID, a terminal ID, and a terminal dormancy indication; means for determining, based on the terminal ID, that NRI for the terminal is present; and means for determining, based on the received Previous Access Network ID, that intra-PDSN handoff is occurring.
23 . A base station for providing a push data service to a dormant terminal, comprising:
means for establishing an A10 connection to a PDSN in response to an origination message from a wireless terminal; means for detecting the wireless terminal becoming a dormant terminal and means for releasing selected network resources associated with the dormant terminal including terminating the A10 connection to the PDSN while assisting in maintaining terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal; means for receiving an origination message to establish an A10 connection with the PDSN in response to detection by the wireless terminal of a different servicing radio access network; means for assisting in updating the terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal when the point of network attachment of the dormant terminal changes; and means for forwarding push data from the PDSN that administers the wireless terminal address.
24 . The base station of claim 23 , wherein means for releasing selected network resources associated with the dormant terminal, further comprises means for removing a PPP state.

The base station of claim 23 , wherein the terminal profile information comprises NIDS Reachability Information (NRI) for the terminal that comprises an Access Network ID (ANID), and wherein the means for assisting in updating the terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal when the point of network attachment of the dormant terminal changes, comprises:
means for assisting in updating the Access Network ID in the NRI with a Current Access Network ID and requesting release of the A10 connection for the terminal upon undergoing an intra-PDSN handoff.
26 . The base station of claim 23 , wherein the push data comprises a terminal IP address and a terminal mobility binding.
27 . The base station of claim 23 , wherein the dormant terminal is initially attached to the network at a first point of attachment that changes.
28 . The base station of claim 23 , further comprising:
means for establishing an A10 connection when the terminal powers on; means for authenticating the terminal, and if the authentication is successful, conveying terminal profile information; and means for assisting in assigning an IP address to the terminal.
29 . A computer-readable media including computer-executable instructions for performing a method for providing a push data service to a dormant terminal, the method comprising:
initiating a packet data session with an access provider network resulting in terminal profile information being forwarded to the access provider network and a wireless terminal address being received; ceasing data exchange over the packet data session to become dormant and releasing selected network resources; sending an origination message to establish an A10 connection with the access provider network in response to detection of a different radio access network; receiving a different wireless terminal address as the wireless terminal address if the different radio access network is part of an inter-PDSN handoff; and receiving push data from a PDSN that administers the wireless terminal address.
30 . A computer-readable media including computer-executable instructions for performing a method for providing a push data service to a dormant terminal, the method comprising:
establishing an A10 connection to a PDSN in response to an origination message from a wireless terminal; detecting the wireless terminal becoming a dormant terminal and releasing selected network resources associated with the dormant terminal including terminating the A10 connection to the PDSN while assisting in maintaining terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal; receiving an origination message to establish an A10 connection with the PDSN in response to detection by the wireless terminal of a different servicing radio access network; assisting in updating the terminal profile information for reaching the dormant terminal when the point of network attachment of the dormant terminal changes; and forwarding push data from the PDSN that administers the wireless terminal address.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
