Selective Advertising Presentations

Abstract

A method for providing commercials includes receiving user input for selecting an advertising parameter and providing a user with a commercial corresponding to the advertising parameter.

1 . A method, comprising: 
 outputting to a device by a digital home communication terminal (DHCT) a graphical user interface (GUI) that comprises a menu having a plurality of user-selectable advertisement categories;    receiving by the DHCT a plurality of user inputs respectively corresponding to user-selected advertisement categories from the plurality of user-selectable advertisement categories, wherein the user inputs are provided by a user of the device; and    responsive to receiving the plurality of user inputs, outputting to the device by the DHCT one or more commercials corresponding to at least one of the user-selected advertisement categories.    
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more commercials are received by the DHCT from a remote server after receiving the plurality of user inputs.  
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more commercials are output to the device at intermittent future times.  
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the one or more commercials are output by the DHCT to a television during respective interruptions in television programs being output by the DHCT.  
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein the one or more commercials are output by the DHCT to the television only during interruptions of television programs having predetermined respective types.  
     
     
         6 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the one or more commercials output by the DHCT correspond exclusively to commercials respectively corresponding to at least one of the user-selected advertisement categories.  
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising outputting to the device by the DHCT a plurality of advertisements.  
     
     
         8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the menu further comprises selectable commercials, selectable advertisements, or a combination of selectable commercials and selectable advertisements.  
     
     
         9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein outputting to the device comprises outputting to a television.  
     
     
         10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein outputting to the device comprises outputting to a display device.  
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein outputting to the device comprises outputting audio.  
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the DHCT comprises one of a computer and a set-top terminal.  
     
     
         13 . A system, comprising: 
 a memory with logic; and    a processor configured with the logic to: 
 output to a device a graphical user interface (GUI) that comprises a menu having a plurality of user-selectable advertisement categories;  
 receive a plurality of user inputs respectively corresponding to user-selected advertisement categories from the plurality of user-selectable advertisement categories, wherein the user inputs are provided by a user of the device; and  
 responsive to receiving the plurality of user inputs, output to the device one or more commercials corresponding to at least one of the user-selected advertisement categories.  
   
     
     
         14 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the processor is further configured with the logic to output the one or more commercials at intermittent future times.  
     
     
         15 . The system of  claim 14 , wherein the device comprises a television, and wherein the processor is further configured with the logic to output the one or more commercials to the television during respective interruptions in outputted television programs.  
     
     
         16 . The system of  claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured with the logic to output the one or more commercials to the television only during interruptions of television programs having predetermined respective types.  
     
     
         17 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the processor is further configured with the logic to output a plurality of advertisements.  
     
     
         18 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the menu further comprises selectable commercials, selectable advertisements, or a combination of selectable commercials and selectable advertisements.  
     
     
         19 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the device comprises a television.  
     
     
         20 . The system of  claim 13 , wherein the device comprises a display device.
