Container for recording media

Abstract

A container for recording media, such as disk(s) comprising first and second essentially identical trays wherein each tray is adapted to releasably receive a disk for protective storage. The trays are oriented in overlying and registered relationship to one another and affixed to one surface of a sheet, such as paperboard, in side-by-side relationship. The tray is spaced apart from one another on the sheet to define a spline area of the sheet between the adjacent sides of the trays. Each tray includes unique respective male and female latch means for releasably securing the trays in a closed attitude.

1 . A container for the protective storage of recording media in the form of a disk comprising: 
 first and second trays each having a top surface, each of the top surfaces comprises a depression adapted to removably receive the disk, the first and second trays configured to be in an overlying and registering relationship to one another and wherein a bottom wall of the first tray being orientated alongside and outside a top wall of the top surface of the second tray and wherein a bottom wall of the second tray being orientated alongside and outside a top wall of the top surface of the first tray.    
   
   
       2 . The container of  claim 1  wherein the first and second trays are essentially identical.  
   
   
       3 . The container of  claim 1  further comprising a planar sheet of material having first and second opposite ends, and a spline is defined between the first and second opposite ends wherein the first and second trays, each having respective rear side walls, affixed to respective opposite ends of the sheet in a coplanar attitude with their respective top surfaces facing away from the sheet and in side-by-side relationship with their respective rear side walls facing one another in the area of the spline of the sheet, whereby when the sheet is folded about the spline back onto itself, the top surfaces of the first and second trays face one another and the first and second trays are in an overlying and registering relationship to one another.  
   
   
       4 . The container of  claim 1  wherein the first and second trays include respective front side walls, and each front side wall includes a male and female latch means disposed in spaced apart relationship along the front side wall of each of first and second trays, the male latch means on each one of the first and second trays being in register with registered female latch means on the first and second trays when the first and second trays are disposed in overlying and registered relationship with one another and with their respective top surfaces facing one another.  
   
   
       5 . The container of  claim 4  wherein the male and female latch means interposed in spaced apart relationship to one another along the front side wall of each of the first and second trays, whereby when the first and second trays are disposed in overlying and registered relationship and with their top surfaces facing one another, the male latch means of one front side wall is disposed in registration with female latch means of the other of the front side walls.  
   
   
       6 . The container of  claim 5  wherein the male latch means includes a planar blade-type projection extending from the top surface of the respective first and second trays, and the female latch means includes first and second planar blade-type projections extending from the top surface of its respective tray and being spaced apart from one another to define a planar space therebetween adapted to receive therein a planar blade-type projection of a male latch means.  
   
   
       7 . The container of  claim 6  wherein when the first and second trays are disposed in overlying and registering relationship to one another and with their top surfaces facing one another, the blade-type projection of the first male latch means of the first tray is in registration with the planar space defined by the female latch means of the second tray.  
   
   
       8 . The container of  claim 1  wherein the depression is disposed in the top surface of the first tray and wherein the depression opens outwardly from the top surface of the first tray.  
   
   
       9 . A container for the protective storage of recording media in the form of a disk comprising: 
 a planar sheet of material having first and second opposite ends and a spline defined between the opposite ends; and    first and second trays each having a top surface and respective rear side walls, each of the top surfaces comprises a top wall and a bottom wall wherein the top wall and the bottom wall having different heights with respect to one another and wherein the first and second trays affixed to respective opposite ends of the sheet in a coplanar attitude, with their respective top surfaces facing away from the sheet and in side-by-side relationship with their respective rear side walls facing one another in the area of the spline of the sheet, whereby when the sheet is folded about the spline back onto itself, the top surfaces of the first and second trays face one another and the first and second trays are in an overlying and registering relationship to one another.
