Information recording medium and recording and/or reproducing apparatus and method

Abstract

An information recording medium and a recording and/or reproducing apparatus and method used to guarantee reproduction compatibility in consideration of the fact that content distribution may be performed according to various business models includes a management information zone in which management information is recorded, wherein the management information indicates an intended type of use of the information recording medium.

1 . An information recording medium comprising a management information zone in which management information is recorded, wherein the management information indicates an intended type of use of the information recording medium.  
   
   
       2 . The information recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein the management information comprises at least one of: 
 user identification information indicating whether the information recording medium is for commercial use or personal use;    wobble signal presence information indicating whether a wobble signal is present in a recorded track of the information recording medium;    disc type information indicating a disc type of the information recording medium; and    a revision code indicating compatibility information of the information recording medium.    
   
   
       3 . The information recording medium of  claim 2 , wherein the wobble signal presence information comprises information about a frequency of the wobble signal.  
   
   
       4 . The information recording medium of  claim 2 , wherein the disc type information comprises information indicating whether the information recording medium is a write-once optical disc, a rewritable optical disc, or an optical disc having a limited data reproduction time.  
   
   
       5 . The information recording medium of  claim 2 , wherein the disc type information comprises information indicating whether the information recording medium is a digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R) for a content scramble system (CSS) download disc or a digital versatile disc-rewritable (DVD-RW) for a CSS download disc.  
   
   
       6 . The information recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein the management information zone is arranged in the form of land prepits of the information recording medium or is located in a control data zone of the information recording medium.  
   
   
       7 . The information recording medium of  claim 1 , wherein the management information is used to indicate whether the information recording medium is compatible with a business model in which content is distributed using a personal recording and/or reproducing apparatus or a business model in which the content is distributed using a dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       8 . An information recording medium, comprising: 
 a control data zone, wherein the control data zone comprises physical format information indicating an intended type of use of the information recording medium, and the physical format information comprises at least one of:    first information having a disc indicator code indicating a disc type of the information recording medium or a revision number code indicating a compatibility version of the information recording medium; and    second information having a user indicator code indicating whether the information recording medium is for commercial use or personal use, or a wobble structure code indicating whether a wobble signal is present in a recorded track of the information recording medium.    
   
   
       9 . The information recording medium of  claim 8 , wherein the physical format information indicates whether the information recording medium is compatible with a business model in which content is distributed using a personal recording and/or reproducing apparatus or a business model in which the content is distributed using a dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       10 . A recording and/or reproducing apparatus that records data on and/or reproduces data from an information recording medium, the recording and/or reproducing apparatus comprising: 
 a recording and/or reproducing unit to record data to and/or reproduce data from the information recording medium; and    a control unit to control the recording and/or reproducing unit to reproduce management information indicating an intended type of use of the information recording medium from the information recording medium and to record data to the information recording medium according to the reproduced management information.    
   
   
       11 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 10 , wherein the control unit recognizes at least one of: 
 user identification information indicating whether the information recording medium is for commercial use or personal use;    wobble signal presence information indicating whether a wobble signal is present in a recorded track of the information recording medium;    disc type information indicating a disc type of the information storage medium; and    a revision code indicating compatibility information of the information recording medium.    
   
   
       12 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein the wobble signal presence information comprises information about a frequency of the wobble signal.  
   
   
       13 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein the disc type information comprises information indicating whether the information recording medium is a write-once optical disc, a rewritable optical disc, or an optical disc having a limited data reproduction time.  
   
   
       14 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 11 , wherein the disc type information includes information indicating whether the information recording medium is a digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R) on which downloaded content is recorded using a content scramble system (CSS) or a digital versatile disc-rewritable (DVD-RW) on which the downloaded content is recorded using the CSS.  
   
   
       15 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 10 , wherein the control unit recognizes whether the information recording medium is used for a business model in which contents are distributed using a personal recording and/or reproducing apparatus or a business model in which contents are distributed using a dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       16 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 10 , wherein the control unit controls the recording and/or reproducing unit to perform recording and/or reproducing when the recognized contents from the reproduced management information indicates that the information recording medium is supported by the recording and/or reproducing apparatus, and ejects the information recording medium or displays an error message when the recognized contents from the reproduced management information indicate that the information recording medium is not supported by the recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       17 . A recording and/or reproducing method that records data on and/or reproduces data from an information recording medium, the recording and/or reproducing method comprising: 
 reproducing management information from the information recording medium to determine an intended type of use of the information recording medium; and    recording and/or reproducing data to and/or from the information recording medium according to the reproduced management information.    
   
   
       18 . The recording and/or reproducing method of  claim 17 , wherein the reproducing of the management information comprises recognizing at least one of: 
 user identification information indicating whether the information recording medium is for commercial use or personal use;    wobble signal presence information indicating whether a wobble signal is present in a recorded track of the information recording medium;    disc type information indicating a disc type of the information storage medium; and    a revision code indicating compatibility information of the information recording medium.    
   
   
       19 . The recording and/or reproducing method of  claim 18 , wherein the wobble signal presence information comprises information about a frequency of the wobble signal.  
   
   
       20 . The recording and/or reproducing method of  claim 18 , wherein the disc type information comprises information indicating whether the information recording medium is a write-once optical disc, a rewritable optical disc, or an optical disc having a limited data reproduction time.  
   
   
       21 . The recording and/or reproducing method of  claim 18 , wherein the disc type information comprises information indicating whether the information recording medium is a digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R) on which downloaded content is recorded using a content scramble system (CSS) or a digital versatile disc-rewritable (DVD-RW) on which the downloaded content is recorded using the CSS.  
   
   
       22 . The recording and/or reproducing method of  claim 17 , wherein the recording and/or reproducing of the data comprises recording and/or reproducing the data to and/or from the information storage medium when the management information indicates that the information storage medium is supported by a recording and/or reproducing apparatus and ejecting the information recording medium or displaying an error message when the management information indicates that the information storage medium is not supported by the recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       23 . The recording and/or reproducing method of  claim 17 , wherein the management information indicates whether the information recording medium is used for a business model in which contents are distributed using a personal recording and/or reproducing apparatus or a business model in which contents are distributed using a dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       24 . An information recording medium comprising a lead-in area, wherein the lead-in area comprises physical format information recorded therein, the physical format information comprising: 
 a disc indicator code indicating a type of the information recording medium; and    a revision number code indicating a compatibility version of the information recording medium.    
   
   
       25 . The information recording medium of  claim 24 , wherein the disc indicator code comprises: 
 a first value including information indicating whether the information recording medium is a digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R) for a content scramble system (CSS) disc; and    a second value representing a reserved area.    
   
   
       26 . The information recording medium of  claim 24 , wherein the physical format information is recorded in a control data zone.  
   
   
       27 . The information recording medium of  claim 24 , wherein the information recording medium comprises a single recording layer per side.  
   
   
       28 . The information recording medium of  claim 24 , wherein the physical format information is recorded in byte position  50  (BP 50 ).  
   
   
       29 . The information recording medium of  claim 24 , wherein the physical format information is not recorded in byte position  50  (BP 50 ).  
   
   
       30 . The information recording medium of  claim 24 , wherein the revision number code is recorded in one byte position and stores compatibility information in four bit positions of the one byte position.  
   
   
       31 . The information recording medium of  claim 30 , wherein if the four bit positions indicate ‘0000,’ the four bit positions indicate revision 1.0.  
   
   
       32 . The information recording medium of  claim 30 , wherein if the four bit positions indicate ‘0000,’ the four bit positions do not indicate revision 1.0.  
   
   
       33 . A recording and/or reproducing apparatus that records data on and/or reproduces data from an information recording medium, the recording and/or reproducing apparatus comprising: 
 a recording and/or reproducing unit to record data to and/or reproduce data from the information recording medium; and    a control unit to control the recording and/or reproducing unit to reproduce physical format information from a lead-in area in the information recording medium and to manage recording in the information recording medium according to a disc indicator code indicating a type of the information recording medium and a revision number code indicating a compatibility version of the information recording medium, wherein the disc indicator code and the revision number code are obtained from the reproduced physical format information.    
   
   
       34 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 33 , wherein the disc indicator code comprises: 
 a first value representing information indicating whether the information recording medium is a digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R) for a content scramble system (CSS) disc; and    a second value representing a reserved area.    
   
   
       35 . A recording and/or reproducing method to record data on and/or reproduce data from an information recording medium, the recording and/or reproducing method comprising: 
 reproducing physical format information from a lead-in area in the information recording medium; and    recording data in the information recording medium according to a disc indicator code indicating a type of the information recording medium and a revision number code indicating a compatibility version of the information recording medium, wherein the disc indicator code is obtained from the reproducing of the physical format information.    
   
   
       36 . The recording and/or reproducing method of  claim 35 , wherein the disc indicator code comprises: 
 a first value including information indicating whether the information recording medium is a digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R) for a content scramble system (CSS) disc; and    a second value representing a reserved area.    
   
   
       37 . An information recording medium, comprising: 
 management information indicating whether the information recording medium has a disc key, wherein the disc key protects copyrighted content which is recorded to and/or reproduced from the information recording medium.    
   
   
       38 . The information recording medium of  claim 37 , wherein if the management information indicates that the information storage medium has the disc key, the information storage medium is intended to be used with a personal recording/and or reproducing apparatus, and if the management information indicates that the information storage medium does not have the disc key, the information storage medium is intended to be used with a dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       39 . The information recording medium of  claim 37 , further comprising a management information zone, wherein the management information is recorded in the management information zone.  
   
   
       40 . The information recording medium of  claim 38 , wherein the dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus comprises a kiosk.  
   
   
       41 . The information recording medium of  claim 39 , further comprising a lead-in area having a data control zone, wherein the management information zone is located in the data control zone.  
   
   
       42 . The information recording medium of  claim 37 , wherein the information recording medium comprises a single recording layer per side.  
   
   
       43 . The information recording medium of  claim 37 , wherein the management information is recorded at byte position (BP)  50 .  
   
   
       44 . The information recording medium of  claim 37 , wherein the management information is not recorded at byte position (BP)  50 .  
   
   
       45 . A recording and/or reproducing apparatus that records data on and/or reproduces data from an information recording medium, the recording and/or reproducing apparatus comprising: 
 a recording and/or reproducing unit to record data to and/or reproduce data from the information recording medium; and    a control unit to control the recording and/or reproducing unit to reproduce management information indicating whether the information recording medium has a disc key and to record data according to the reproduced management information, wherein the disc key protects copyrighted content which is recorded to and/or reproduced from the information recording medium.    
   
   
       46 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 45 , wherein if the management information indicates that the information storage medium has the disc key, the information storage medium is intended to be used with a personal recording/and or reproducing apparatus, and if the management information indicates that the information storage medium does not have the disc key, the information storage medium is intended to be used with a dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus.  
   
   
       47 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 45 , wherein the control unit controls the recording and/or reproducing unit to reproduce the management information from a management information zone of the information recording medium.  
   
   
       48 . The recording and/or reproducing apparatus of  claim 46 , wherein the dedicated commercial recording and/or reproducing apparatus comprises a kiosk.
