Abstract

To provide a method for controlling the display of a screen which allows the user to discriminate the scanned image and the recognition result intuitively and easily. The display control method for allowing the user to verify the recognition result of a character on a verification screen form 300 is implemented as follows. First of all, the standard pattern of a specific character stored in a memory and a plurality of character images recognized as the specific character are read, upon an operation of the user. And the read standard pattern is displayed in a recognition result character display portion 310 within the verification screen form 300 and a plurality of the read character image are displayed sequentially in a character image display portion 320 adjacent or proximal to the recognition result character display portion 310 and at a predetermined position of a character image list display portion 330 . A plurality of character images are listed in the character image list display portion 330 , in which the already displayed character images are shifted one position from the predetermined position and displayed.

1 . A method in a data processing system for controlling the display of a verification screen that allows a user to verify the recognition result of a symbol recognized by a computer, comprising: 
 reading a plurality of symbol images that are each organized into a group as being recognized as a same specific symbol stored in a memory upon an operation of the user; and    displaying sequentially in time said plurality of read symbol images of the group at a fixed, predetermined position on said verification screen of a display device which is immediately adjacent to a display of a standard pattern that each of the plurality of symbol images was recognized as matching, such that a display of one of the plurality of read symbol images that is subsequently displayed sequentially in time at the fixed, predetermined position on said verification screen overwrites another one of the plurality of read symbol images that was displayed at the fixed, predetermined position on said verification screen.    
   
   
       2 . A program product, embodied on a computer-readable medium, for controlling the display of a verification screen that allows a user to verify the recognition result of a symbol by controlling a computer, said program product comprising computer-executable instructions, which when executed by the computer, cause the computer to perform steps of: 
 reading a plurality of symbol images that are each organized into a group as being recognized as a same specific symbol stored in a memory upon an operation of the user;    displaying sequentially said plurality of read symbol images of the group on said verification screen of a display device without displaying any other symbol images that are recognized as another specific symbol.    
   
   
       3 . The program product according to  claim 2 , further comprising reading a standard pattern of said same specific symbol stored in the memory upon an operation of the user, as well as displaying said standard pattern on said verification screen of said display device at a fixed, predetermined position on said display device immediately adjacent to one of said plurality of read symbol images.

The program product according to  claim 2 , wherein said displaying sequentially said plurality of read symbol images of the group further comprises displaying, at a later time, a newly displayed read symbol image of the group which has not previously been displayed on said verification screen, and the plurality of read symbol images of the group that are displayed on said verification screen in a list format under the control of the computer, wherein the newly displayed read symbol image of the group is said one of said plurality of read symbol images that said standard pattern is displayed immediately adjacent to.  
   
   
       5 . The program product according to  claim 2 , wherein said displaying sequentially said plurality of read symbol images of the group further comprises displaying, at a later time, a newly displayed read symbol image of the group at a predetermined position sequentially, and displaying said plurality of read symbol images of the group that were previously displayed at new positions shifted each one column from a previous respective position where each of said plurality of read symbol images were previously displayed.  
   
   
       6 . An information processing apparatus for displaying the recognition result of graphics on a predetermined screen, comprising: 
 graphics image display means for displaying sequentially in time at a predetermined, selectable rate a plurality of recognized graphic images on said screen such that each of the plurality of recognized graphic images are displayed one at a time on said screen by the graphics image display means; and    graphics image list display means for displaying said sequentially displayed graphics images in a list format on said screen, wherein said sequentially displayed graphics images are sequentially shifted to another position on said screen each time a new recognized graphic image is displayed on said screen.    
   
   
       7 . The information processing apparatus according to  claim 6 , wherein the each of the plurality of recognized graphic images are organized in a group as being recognized as a same specific symbol, and further comprising recognition result image display means for displaying a standard pattern indicating said recognized images at a fixed, predetermined position on said screen.

The information processing apparatus according to  claim 7 , wherein said graphics image display means displays a graphics image display area on said screen, and said graphics image list display means displays a graphics image list display area on said screen, in which said graphics image display area and said graphics image list display area are arranged adjacently.

The information processing apparatus according to  claim 7 , wherein said graphics image display means displays a graphics image display area on said screen, and said graphics image list display means displays a graphics image list display area on said screen, in which said graphics image display area is arranged within said graphics image list display area.  
   
   
       10 . An information processing apparatus comprising: 
 a display unit for displaying a predetermined screen;    a display control section for generating said screen for verifying a recognition result of a symbol and displaying said screen on said display unit; and    an operation accepting section for detecting an operation made on said screen;    wherein said display control section controls display contents that are displayed (1) in a symbol image display area for displaying each of a plurality of recognized symbol images recognized as a same specific symbol sequentially in time one after another, and (2) in a symbol image list display area for displaying (i) a recognized symbol image currently displayed in said symbol image display area and (ii) the recognized symbol images previously displayed in said symbol image display area without displaying any other symbol images recognized as another specific symbol.    
   
   
       11 . The information processing apparatus according to  claim 10 , wherein said display control section controls the display contents that are displayed in a recognition result symbol display area for displaying, at a fixed, predetermined position on said display unit immediately adjacent to one of said plurality of read symbol images, a standard pattern indicating said recognized symbol image currently displayed in said symbol image display area, and wherein each of the plurality of recognized symbol images are organized into a group as being recognized as the standard pattern.  
   
   
       12 . The information processing apparatus according to  claim 10 , wherein said display control section shifts display location for each of the recognized symbol images in the symbol image list display area by one character from where the recognized symbol images are currently displayed, every time a new symbol image is displayed at a predetermined position in said symbol image list display area such that the recognized symbol images in the symbol image list display area are sequentially shifted to another position on said screen every time another new symbol image is displayed.  
   
   
       13 . The information processing apparatus according to  claim 11 , further comprising a recognition result correcting section for correcting the recognition result of the symbol image displayed on said display unit, wherein said recognition result correcting section receives a notification of an operation for correcting the symbol image accepted by said operation accepting section, replaces the recognition result of the symbol image displayed on said display unit with a new recognition result symbol input by said correcting operation, and groups the new recognition result symbol with another group associated with another standard pattern.

The information processing apparatus according to  claim 10 , further comprising a symbol data storage section for storing and managing the symbol images grouped for every recognition result, wherein said display control section displays sequentially a symbol image read from said symbol data storage section at a predetermined position in said symbol image list display area.  
   
   
       15 . The information processing apparatus according to  claim 14 , further comprising a document data storage section for storing and managing a document image from which said symbol image stored in said symbol data storage section is read, wherein the symbol image stored in said symbol data storage section is associated with the symbol image written in a predetermined area of each document image, and wherein the display control section is operable to selectively display the document image on the display unit in response to the recognition result correcting section.  
   
   
       16 . An optical character recognizer comprising: 
 character recognition means for recognizing a character image as a character;    display means for displaying a predetermined screen providing a user interface; and    display control means for controlling the display of the screen to be displayed on said display means;    wherein said display means displays a pair of display portions arranged at predetermined positions within said screen and a list display portion;    said display control means displays a standard pattern indicating the recognized character on one of said pair of display portions, and automatically displays sequentially a recognized character image, as selected from a plurality of recognized character images organized in a group as all being recognized as being the standard pattern, in both (1) another of said pair of display portions and (2) at a predetermined position of said list display portion, wherein the predetermined position is immediately adjacent to another predetermined position of said list display portion where another one of the plurality of recognized character images is displayed.

The optical character recognizer according to  claim 16 , wherein said pair of display portions are arranged adjacent to each other, and said list display portion is arranged near said pair of display portions, wherein said display control means displays sequentially a character image at a position of said list display portion divided into a matrix that is closest to said pair of display portions, and displays already displayed character images in said list display portion at the positions becoming more distant from said pair of display portions as more character images are displayed sequentially in time at a time-based display rate selectable by a display rate controller that varies the display rate.  
   
   
       18 . The optical character recognizer according to  claim 16 , wherein said display control means displays a plurality of pairs of display portions, with a first of the plurality of pairs being associated with a first group containing a first plurality of recognized character images recognized as being a first standard pattern, and a second of the plurality of pairs being associated with a second group containing a second plurality of recognized character images recognized as being a second standard pattern that is different from the first standard pattern.  
   
   
       19 . The optical character recognizer according to  claim 16 , wherein said display control means, responsive to a user input selecting the recognized character image, displays an exact replication of a document image that was previously processed by the character recognition means in obtaining the plurality of recognized character images.  
   
   
       20 . The optical character recognizer according to  claim 16 , wherein a part of said display portion for displaying said character image has a sequential number display region for displaying the number, and said display control means changes the number displayed in said sequential number display region as more character images are displayed sequentially.
