Compositions and methods for suppressing the immune system of a mammal using ubiquitin and derivatives and analogs thereof

       17 . A pharmaceutical composition, comprising ubiquitin and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.  
   
   
       18 . A method of treating or preventing sepsis or endotoxic shock in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal an effective amount of ubiquitin, thereby treating or preventing sepsis or endotoxic shock in the mammal.  
   
   
       19 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein the mammal is human.  
   
   
       20 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein said administering is effected intravenously.  
   
   
       21 . The method of  claim 18 , wherein said effective amount is between 0.01 and 10 mg/kg body weight.  
   
   
       22 . A method of treating or preventing pulmonary failure in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal an effective amount of ubiquitin, thereby treating or preventing pulmonary failure in the mammal.  
   
   
       23 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein said mammal is human.  
   
   
       24 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein said administering is effected intravenously.  
   
   
       25 . The method of  claim 22  wherein said effective amount is between 0.01 and 10 mg/kg body weight.  
   
   
       26 . A method of inducing immunosuppression in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal an effective amount of lubiquitin, thereby inducing immunosuppression in the mammal.  
   
   
       27 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein said mammal is human.  
   
   
       28 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein said administering is effected intravenously.  
   
   
       29 . The method of  claim 22 , wherein said effective amount is between 0.01 and 10 mg/kg body weight.  
   
   
       30 . A method of treating or preventing a Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) mediated disease in a mammal, comprising administering to the mammal an effective amount of ubiquitin, thereby treating or preventing the TNF mediated disease in the mammal.
