Multifunctional optical assembly

Abstract

An optical assembly including a light management component and a light delivery component is disclosed. The light management component and the light delivery component are attached together in a manner that defines voids between the light management component and the light delivery component.

1 . An optical assembly comprising: 
 a light management component comprising first and second structured major surfaces having periodic structures with a same pitch; and    a light delivery component comprising an exit surface attached to the second structured major surface at one or more attachment points, the one or more attachment points defining unfilled voids located between the exit surface and the second structured major surface, wherein one or both of the light management component and the light delivery component exhibit an optical gain of one or more.    
   
   
       2 . The optical assembly of  claim 1 , wherein at least one structure in the first structured major surface comprises a curved facet.  
   
   
       3 . The optical assembly of  claim 2 , wherein the at least one structure has a cross section of a convex arc.  
   
   
       4 . The optical assembly of  claim 1 , wherein at least one structure in the second structured major surface is rectangular.  
   
   
       5 . The optical assembly of  claim 1 , wherein at least one structure in the second structured major surface is optically diffusive.  
   
   
       6 . The optical assembly of  claim 1 , wherein at least one structure in the second structured major surface comprises a colored pigment.  
   
   
       7 . The optical assembly of  claim 6 , wherein the colored pigment is a white pigment.  
   
   
       8 . The optical assembly of  claim 1 , wherein at least one structure in the second structured major surface comprises an adhesive.  
   
   
       9 . The optical assembly of  claim 1 , wherein the light deliver component comprises a diffuser.
