Claims

Abstract

An insertion device and insertion set. The insertion device for inserting at least a portion of at least one piercing member of an insertion set through the skin of a patient includes a device housing, a carrier body and a driver. The carrier body is slidably received within the device housing for movement between an advanced position and a retracted position. The carrier body also includes a receiving structure to support the insertion set in a position with the at least one piercing member oriented for insertion through the skin of the patient at a predetermined angle relative to the skin of the patient upon movement of the carrier body from the retracted position to the advanced position. The driver is operatively coupled between the device housing and the carrier body to urge the carrier body with a controlled force and speed from the retracted position toward the advanced position to place at least a portion of the at least one piercing member of the insertion set thorough the skin of the patient to install the insertion set to the patient. The receiving structure of the carrier body is removable from the insertion set while maintaining the installation of the insertion set to the patient.

         38 . A system for installing a cannula through the skin of a patient, the system comprising: 
 a piercing member;    a cannula coupled to the piercing member; and    a trigger-type actuator mechanism coupled to the piercing member and the cannula,    wherein the trigger-type actuator mechanism moves the piercing member and the cannula from a retracted position to an advanced position to install the cannula through the skin of the patient,    wherein the cannula is installed to avoid contacting bone, and    wherein the trigger-type actuator mechanism is adapted to remove the piercing member from the patient while maintaining installation of the cannula.    
     
     
         39 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the trigger-type actuator mechanism installs the cannula at a controlled force and speed.  
     
     
         40 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the trigger-type actuator mechanism utilizes a spring to urge the piercing member and the cannula to the advanced position.  
     
     
         41 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the trigger-type actuator mechanism is structured to insert the cannula at a predetermined angle relative to the skin of the patient.  
     
     
         42 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the cannula is installed in the patient's transcutaneous tissue.  
     
     
         43 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the cannula is installed in the patient's subcutaneous tissue.  
     
     
         44 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the piercing member is a needle.  
     
     
         45 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the cannula is coupled to an insertion set.  
     
     
         46 . A system according to  claim 38 , wherein the piercing member is attached to the trigger-type actuator mechanism.  
     
     
         47 . A system for installing a cannula through the skin of a patient, the system comprising: 
 a piercing member;    a cannula coupled to the piercing member; and    an injector coupled to the piercing member and the cannula,    wherein the injector moves the piercing member and the cannula from a retracted position to an advanced position to install the cannula through the skin of the patient,    wherein the cannula is installed to avoid contacting bone, and    wherein the injector is adapted to remove the piercing member from the patient while maintaining installation of the cannula.    
     
     
         48 . A system according to  claim 47 , wherein the injector installs the cannula at a controlled force and speed.  
     
     
         49 . A system according to  claim 47 , wherein the injector utilizes a spring to urge the piercing member and the cannula to the advanced position.  
     
     
         50 . A system according to  claim 47 , wherein the injector is structured to insert the cannula at a predetermined angle relative to the skin of the patient.  
     
     
         51 . A system according to  claim 47 , wherein the cannula is installed in the patient's transcutaneous tissue.  
     
     
         52 . A system according to  claim 47 , wherein the cannula is installed in the patient's subcutaneous tissue.  
     
     
         53 . A system according to  claim 47 , wherein the piercing member is a needle.
