Abstract
A composition comprising a magnesium halide coated macroporous carbonaceous substrate is provided for effecting moisture removal from a hydrogen halide fluid. Moisture removal is effected by intimately contacting the hydrogen halide fluid with the magnesium halide coated macroporous carbonaceous substrate and separating the fluid from the coated substrate.

exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A moisture selective hydrogen halide fluid purifier, comprising:
a housing having an inlet and an outlet; a bed of anhydrous magnesium halide which has been deposited to fill the void\volume of and coated on the surface of an activated porous carbonaceous support that is liquid hydrogen halide tolerant contained in said housing; and a pressurized sample cylinder connected to the housing inlet through a gas manifold.
2 . The purifier of claim 1 , wherein the carbonaceous support comprises particles having an average pore size of about 20 Å to about 1000 Å.
3 . The purifier of claim 1 , wherein the magnesium halide is magnesium chloride.
4 . The purifier of claim 1 , wherein the magnesium halide is magnesium bromide.
5 . The purifier of claim 3 wherein at least about 1.8% by weight MgCl 2 is present on the support.
6 . The purifier of claim 3 wherein at least about 17.7% by weight MgCl 2 is present on the support.

The moisture selective hydrogen halide fluid purifier of claim 1 , wherein the bed of anhydrous magnesium halide has been deposited to fill the void volume of and coated on the surface of an activated porous carbonaceous support that is liquid hydrogen halide tolerant contained in said housing; wherein the anhydrous bed of magnesium halide is produced by activating a porous carbonaceous support;
depositing a solution of dialkyl magnesium in an amount sufficient to coat the surface and fill the void volume of the porous carbonaceous support; and contacting the support with hydrogen halide to convert the dialkyl magnesium halide to magnesium halide.
8 . The moisture selective hydrogen halide fluid purifier of claim 1 , wherein the activated carbonaceous support comprises pores having an average pore size greater than about 100 angstroms up to about 100 nm.
9 . The purifier of claim 8 , wherein the anhydrous magnesium halide has a moisture adsorption capacity of from about 40 to about 60 liters of water per liter of magnesium halide.
10 . The moisture selective liquid or gas hydrogen halide purifier of claim 1 , wherein hydrogen halide purifier removes moisture from a gas or liquid at high pressure.
11 . The purifier of claim 10 , wherein the pressure is up to about 1100 psig at 50° C.
12 . A moisture selective hydrogen halide purification media, comprising a bed of anhydrous magnesium halide which has been deposited to fill the void volume of and coated on the surfaces of an activated porous carbonaceous substrate that is liquid hydrogen halide tolerant.
13 . The purification media of claim 12 , wherein the hydrogen halide is a gas.
14 . The purification media of claim 12 , wherein the hydrogen halide is a liquid.
15 . The purification media of claim 12 , wherein the carbonaceous substrate are particles having an average pore size of about 20 Å to about 1000 Å.
16 . The purification media of claim 12 , wherein the magnesium halide is magnesium chloride.
17 . The purification media of claim 12 , wherein the magnesium halide is magnesium bromide.
18 . The purification media of claim 16 , wherein at least about 1.8% by weight MgCl 2 is present on the substrate.
19 . The purification media of claim 16 , wherein at least about 17.7% by weight MgCl 2 is present on the substrate.
20 . The moisture selective hydrogen halide purification media of claim 12 , wherein the anhydrous bed of magnesium halide is produced by activating a porous carbonaceous substrate; depositing a solution of dialkyl magnesium in an amount sufficient to coat the surface and fill the void volume of the porous carbonaceous substrate; and contacting the substrate with hydrogen halide to convert the dialkyl magnesium to magnesium halide.
21 . The moisture selective hydrogen halide purification media of claim 12 , wherein the activated carbonaceous substrate comprises pores having an average pore size greater than about 100 angstroms up to about 100 nm.
22 . The purification media of claim 21 , wherein the anhydrous magnesium halide has a moisture adsorption capacity of from about 40 to about 60 liters of water per liter of magnesium halide.
23 . A moisture selective hydrogen halide purification media, comprising a bed of anhydrous magnesium halide which has been deposited to fill the void volume of and coated on the surfaces of an activated porous carbonaceous substrate that is liquid hydrogen halide tolerant, wherein the activated carbonaceous substrate removes moisture from a gas or liquid at high pressure.
24 . The purification media of claim 23 , wherein the pressure is up to about 1100 psig at 50° C.
