Applicator device for paint and surface coatings

Abstract

An applicator device ( 10 ) is provided for applying surface coatings ( 32 ) such as paint or lacquer to a surface ( 34 ). The preferred embodiment is a glove ( 12 ) where the palm side ( 28 ) of the palm portion ( 16 ), the thumb ( 18 ) and the fingers ( 20, 22, 24 and 26 ) are provided with a layer of painters foam ( 36 ). The foam ( 36 ) absorbs paint or other coating liquid ( 32 ) and retains it until ready to deliver to the surface ( 34 ).

1 . An applicator device for applying coatings to surfaces, comprising: 
 a glove having a palm side portion; and    a foam layer attached to said palm side portion, said foam layer being characterized by being able to absorb coating liquids and to release such liquids to a surface when applied thereto and said foam layer having sufficient retention volume to facilitate use in coating a significant portion of said surface without additional absorption.    
   
   
       2 . The applicator device of  claim 1 , wherein 
 said glove is formed of a liquid-proof material to protect the hands of the user from said coating liquid.    
   
   
       3 . The applicator device of  claim 1 , wherein 
 said glove includes individual thumb and finger portions and said foam extends partially about the sides thereof.    
   
   
       4 . The applicator device of  claim 1 , wherein 
 said foam is painters foam.    
   
   
       5 . The applicator device of  claim 1 , wherein 
 said glove is adapted to be disposable.    
   
   
       6 . A painters glove, comprising: 
 a glove body adapted to fit over the hand of a user, said glove body including a palm side and a backhand side;    a surface engaging layer secured to said palm side for the user to selectively apply said surface engaging layer to selected surfaces wherein said surface engaging layer is an absorbent foam adapted for use with paints and lacquers.

       9 . The painters glove of  claim 6 , wherein 
 said glove body includes separate thumb portions and finger portions.    
   
   
       10 . The painters glove of  claim 9 , wherein 
 said surface engaging layer is applied so as to extend partially about the sides of said thumb and finger portions.    
   
   
       11 . The painters glove of  claim 7 , wherein 
 said absorbent foam has a thickness of about 0.3 centimeters and is adapted for detail work.    
   
   
       12 . The painters glove of  claim 6 , wherein 
 said absorbent foam has a thickness of about 0.6 centimeters and is adapted for general work.    
   
   
       13 . The painters glove of  claim 6 , wherein 
 said absorbent foam has a thickness of about 1.2 centimeters and is adapted for high volume work.    
   
   
       14 . The painters glove of  claim 6 , wherein 
 said glove is provided with a wrist portion for protecting the wrist of the user and holding the glove in position.    
   
   
       15 . A paint applicator glove, comprising: 
 a liquid impervious glove body including a palm side and a backhand side, a thumb portion and four finger portions; and    an absorbent layer secured to said palm side for absorbing liquid and delivering said liquid to a selected surface.    
   
   
       16 . The paint applicator glove of  claim 15 , wherein 
 said absorbent layer is painters foam.    
   
   
       17 . The paint applicator glove of  claim 15 , wherein 
 said absorbent layer has a thickness of between 0.3 and 1.3 centimeters.    
   
   
       18 . The paint applicator glove of  claim 15 , wherein 
 said absorbent layer is secured to said palm side by an adhesive which is not soluble in the selected coating material.    
   
   
       19 . The paint applicator glove of  claim 15 , wherein 
 said absorbent layer extends about the sides of said finger portions such that coatings may be applied to the surface with the side edges of the fingers as well as with the palm side.
