Abstract
A power impact tool adapter, for use in installing a bit to be used in a striking-motion-deactivated mode to a power impact tool, includes an SDS type shank portion to be held by a chuck; closed grooves to be mated with sprung balls to prevent the release of the bit; and slide grooves to be slidably mated with wedges applying a rotational force to the bit. An axial length of each slide groove is shorter than that of a slide groove of a standard SDS shank such that the end of the shank portion is prevented from contacting a striking member of the power impact tool which applies a striking force to the bit.

A power impact tool adapter for use with a power impact tool operating in one of a striking-motion-activated mode for transferring a rotational force and applying a striking force in an axial direction of rotation to a bit and a striking-motion-deactivated mode for transferring only the rotational force to the bit, the power impact tool including a striking member applying the striking force to the bit and a chuck for holding the bit, the chuck being adapted to accommodate an SDS (Special Direct System) shank and having sprung balls for preventing the bit from being released from the chuck and wedges for applying the rotational force to the bit, the adapter, for use in installing an output bit to be used in the striking-motion-deactivated mode to the power impact tool, comprising:
a shank portion to be held by the chuck; closed grooves to be mated with the sprung balls; and slide grooves to be slidably mated with the wedges, the closed grooves and the slide grooves being formed on a peripheral surface of the shank portion, wherein an axial length of each slide groove having one end in contact with an end of the shank portion is shorter than that of a slide groove of the SDS shank such that the end of the shank portion is prevented from contacting the striking member of the power impact tool by a positional restriction in the axial direction set by the slide grooves and the wedges.
2 . The power impact tool adapter of claim 1 , wherein the other end of each slide groove has a slanted surface adapted to match with an end surface shape of each wedge.
