Claims

Abstract

Devices and methods for assaying a sample for the presence of at least one analyte are provided. The subject compression devices include a base and a cover configured to apply a compression force to a structure comprising a first substrate separated from a second substrate by a separator when present in the device. The subject methods include contacting a sample with a first surface of a first substrate to produce a substrate supported sample, placing the substrate supported sample in contact with a second substrate to form a structure that includes the first and second substrates spaced-apart from each other by a separator, wherein one of the substrates is an array substrate having at least one array, applying a compression force to compress the structure together using a compression device and reading the at least one array to obtain a result.

1 . A device for performing an array assay, said device comprising a base and a cover configured to apply a compression force to a structure comprising a first substrate spaced apart from a second substrate by a separator, when said structure is present in said device.  
     
     
         2 . The device according to  claim 1 , wherein one of said first and second substrates is an array substrate having at least one array.  
     
     
         3 . The device according to  claim 1 , wherein said separator is a fluid barrier.  
     
     
         4 . The device according to  claim 3 , wherein said fluid barrier is positioned on a first surface of one of said first and second substrates to define at least one container element.  
     
     
         5 . The device according to  claim 4 , wherein the volume of said container element ranges from about ______ μl to about ______ μl.  
     
     
         6 . The device according to  claim 1 , wherein said device is configured to apply said compression force uniformly to said structure.

 (a) a structure comprising a first substrate spaced-apart from a second substrate by a separator; and    (b) a device comprising a base and a cover configured to apply a compression force to said structure.    
     
     
         14 . A method of assaying a sample for the presence of at least one analyte, said method comprising: 
 (a) contacting said sample with a first surface of a first substrate to produce a substrate supported sample;    (b) placing said substrate supported sample in contact with a second substrate to form a structure comprising said first and second substrates spaced-apart from each other by a separator, wherein one of said substrates is an array substrate having at least one array;    (c) applying a compression force to compress said structure together using a compression device comprising a base and a cover configured to apply a compression force to said structure when present in said compression device; and    (d) reading said at least one array to obtain a result.    
     
     
         15 . The method according to  claim 14 , wherein said separator is a fluid barrier.  
     
     
         16 . The method according to  claim 14 , wherein said fluid barrier provide one or more container elements.  
     
     
         17 . The method according to  claim 14 , wherein said compression device applies opposing forces to said first and second substrates.  
     
     
         18 . The method according to  claim 14 , wherein said compression force is applied uniformly.  
     
     
         19 . The method according to  claim 14 , wherein said compression device is a slideably engageable compression device.  
     
     
         20 . The method according to  claim 14 , wherein said compression device is a cam compression device.

 (a) receiving a pre-packaged substrate having at least one array in a compression device from a remote site, said compression device comprising a base and a cover configured to apply a compression force to a structure comprising said pre-packaged spaced-apart from a backing element by a separator;    (b) performing an array assay using said received compression device and said pre-packaged substrate;    (c) removing said pre-packaged substrate having at least one array from said compression device; and    (d) reading said at least one array to obtain a result.    
     
     
         33 . The method according to  claim 32 , wherein said pre-packaged substrate is retained in at least one of a substrate receiving frame and an array holder in said compression device.  
     
     
         34 . A method for using a substrate having at least one array retained in at least one of a substrate receiving frame and an array holder for performing an array assay and reading a result of said array assay, said method comprising:. 
 (a) performing an array assay using a compression device comprising a base and a cover configured to apply a compression force to a structure comprising said retained substrate spaced-apart from a second substrate by a separator; and    (b) removing said retained substrate having at least one array from said array assay device; and    (c) mounting said retained substrate having at least one array on an array scanner so that said retained substrate having at least one array may be read by said scanner while retained in at least one of a substrate receiving frame and an array holder.    
     
     
         35 . The method according to  claim 34 , further comprising reading said mounted at least one array.  
     
     
         36 . A kit for performing an assay, said kit comprising: 
 (a) the device of  claim 1;  and    (b) instructions for using said device in a method according to  claim 14 .    
     
     
         37 . The kit according to  claim 36 , wherein said kit further comprises at least one sample preparation reagent.  
     
     
         38 . The kit according to  claim 36 , wherein said kit further comprises wash medium.
