Abstract

The present invention comprises a fire resistant wood product and method of manufacture thereof. In one embodiment, the fire resistant wood product comprises a resin and a fire retardant composition, wherein the resin comprises an isocyanate and the fire retardant composition comprises a boron containing compound.

Claims

1 . A fire resistant wood product comprising; 
 a wood precursor material;    a fire retardant comprising a boron containing compound, wherein said fire retardant is 8% to 20% by weight of said wood product; and    a resin comprising an isocyanate for binding said precursor material.    
     
     
         2 . The wood product of  claim 1 , wherein said boron containing compound is disodium octaborate tetrahydrate.  
     
     
         3 . The wood product of  claim 2 , wherein said resin is diphenylmethane diisocyanate.  
     
     
         4 . The wood product of  claim 3 , wherein said fire retardant is in a powder form.  
     
     
         5 . The wood product of  claim 2 , wherein said fire retardant further comprises a metal hydroxide.  
     
     
         6 . The wood product of  claim 4 , wherein said metal hydroxide is alumina tryhydrate.  
     
     
         7 . The wood product of  claim 5 , wherein said fire retardant comprises said disodium octaborate tetrahydrate and alumina trihydrate at a ratio of 75:25 by weight.  
     
     
         8 . The wood product of  claim 7 , wherein said fire retardant is in a powder form.  
     
     
         9 . The wood product of  claim 4 , wherein said wood product is oriented strand board.  
     
     
         10 . A method of manufacturing a fire retardant wood product comprising: 
 blending a resin comprising an isocyanate with the wood product; and    applying a fire retardant comprising a boron containing compound to said wood product, such that said fire retardant is 8% to 20% by weight of said manufactured wood product.    
     
     
         11 . The method of  claim 10 , wherein said boron containing compound is disodium octaborate tetrehydrate in powder form.  
     
     
         12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein said isocyanate is diphenylmethane diisocyanate.  
     
     
         13 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein said fire retardant further comprises a metal hydroxide.  
     
     
         14 . The method of  claim 13 , wherein said metal hydroxide is alumina trihydrate.  
     
     
         15 . The method of  claim 14 , wherein said fire retardant comprises said boron containing compound and said metal hydroxide at a ratio of 75:25 by weight.  
     
     
         16 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein said fire retardant is applied to said wood product prior to said blending step.  
     
     
         17 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein said fire retardant is applied to said wood product simultaneous with said blending step.  
     
     
         18 . The method of  claim 12  wherein the wood product is oriented strand board.  
     
     
         19 . A fire retardant composition comprising a boron containing compound and a metal hydroxide, wherein the ratio of the boron containing compound to the metal hydroxide is between 50% to 95%: 5% to 50% by weight.  
     
     
         20 . The composition of  claim 19 , wherein said boron containing compound is disodium octaborate tetrehydrate.  
     
     
         21 . The composition of  claim 20 , wherein said metal hydroxide is alumina trihydrate.
