Golf club head recess

Abstract

A recess for a golf club head providing the opportunity for better shots as torque and/or twisting is reduced between the hosel and the golf club head's center of mass. At the point where the hosel of a golf club connects to the golf club head, a recess may be provided that reduces the distance between the interconnection as well as the center of mass of the golf club head. The connection is then sunk into the golf club head to a certain degree thereby eliminating the common distance that occurs when the hosel is merely attached to the top of a golf club head. By reducing torque and/or twisting, shots with a golf club head having a recess may be more predictable, reliable, leading to a better golf game. Additionally, a flared golf club hosel is disclosed.

A golf club head with a ball-striking surface and a body coupled to said striking surface rearwardly thereof, the golf club head defining a recess adapted to receive a hosel, said recess descending into the golf club head to thereby lower the connection of a hosel with the golf club head with respect to an upper surface of the golf club head.  
   
   
       2 . A golf club head, comprising: 
 a ball-striking surface adapted to strike a golf ball;    a body coupled to said ball-striking surface generally rearwardly thereof;    at least one of said ball-striking surface and said body defining a recess; and    said recess adapted to receive a hosel therein; whereby    said recess provides a connection with said hosel that generally reduces a distance between said connection and a center of mass of the golf club head to correspondingly reduce torque and/or twisting of the golf club head about said connection when said golf club head strikes said golf ball.    
   
   
       3 . A golf club head as set forth in  claim 2 , further comprising: 
 said recess in a portion of said golf club head selected from the group consisting of: said ball striking surface, said body, and a combination of said ball-striking surface and said body.    
   
   
       4 . A golf club head as set forth in  claim 2 , further comprising: 
 said recess having a surface selected from the group consisting of: surfaces curved in one dimension and surfaces curved in two dimensions.    
   
   
       5 . A golf club head as set forth in  claim 4 , further comprising: 
 said recess being curved in one dimension being generally curved along a direction generally parallel or similar to in direction as a long axis of the golf club head present along a toe and heel of the golf club head.    
   
   
       6 . A golf club head as set forth in  claim 4 , further comprising: 
 said recess being curved in two dimensions being generally curved along a first direction generally parallel or similar to in direction as a long axis of the golf club head present along a toe and heel of the golf club head and a second direction generally perpendicular or similar to in direction perpendicular to said long axis of the golf club head.    
   
   
       7 . A golf club head as set forth in  claim 2 , further comprising: 
 a hosel coupled to said recess at said connection.    
   
   
       8 . A golf club head as set forth in  claim 7 , further comprising: 
 said hosel selected from the group consisting of: flared hosels and cylindrical hosels.    
   
   
       9 . A golf club head as set forth in  claim 2 , further comprising: 
 the golf club head selected from the group consisting of: driver heads, iron heads, and putter heads.    
   
   
       10 . A golf club head, comprising: 
 a ball-striking surface adapted to strike a golf ball;    a body coupled to said ball-striking surface generally rearwardly thereof;    at least one of said ball-striking surface and said body defining a recess;    said recess adapted to receive a hosel therein;    said recess in a portion of said golf club head selected from the group consisting of: said ball striking surface, said body, and a combination of said ball-striking surface and said body;    said recess having a surface selected from the group consisting of: surfaces curved in one dimension and surfaces curved in two dimensions;    said recess being curved along a first direction generally parallel or similar to in direction as a long axis of the golf club head present along a toe and heel of the golf club head if said recess is curved in one dimension;    said recess being generally curved along a first direction generally parallel or similar to in direction as a long axis of the golf club head present along a toe and heel of the golf club head and a second direction generally perpendicular or similar to in direction perpendicular to said long axis of the golf club head if said recess is curved in two dimensions;    said hosel selected from the group consisting of: flared hosels and cylindrical hosels; and    the golf club head selected from the group consisting of: driver heads, iron heads, and putter heads; whereby    said recess provides a connection with said hosel that generally reduces a distance between said connection and a center of mass of the golf club head to correspondingly reduce torque and/or twisting of the golf club head about said connection when said golf club head strikes said golf ball.
