Abstract

A wind protection system, a roof ballast module, and a method for protecting a building from high winds are described. The wind protection system includes a plurality of roof ballast modules disposed across a rigid roof. The roof ballast modules may include several elongate liquid impermeable bladders. A valve permits filling the bladder with a liquid, such as water. Also, a method of protecting a building from high wind includes placing several water impermeable bladder panels on a rigid roof to ballast the roof.

1 . A wind protection system comprising: 
 a plurality of roof ballast modules adapted to be disposed on a rigid roof, each roof ballast module comprising: 
 a plurality of liquid impermeable bladders, the bladders defining an interior and an exterior;  
 a first port on at least one of the bladders permitting the interior of the bladder to be filled with a liquid; and  
 at least one channel permitting fluid communication between the plurality of bladders.  
   
   
   
       2 . The wind protection system according to  claim 1 , further comprising: 
 a protective shield extending from adjacent the roof to adjacent the ground; and    an anchor system to secure the protective shield to the ground.    
   
   
       3 . The wind protection system according to  claim 2 , the anchor system comprising at least one bladder filled with liquid.  
   
   
       4 . The wind protection system according to  claim 2 , the anchor system comprising at least one ground pillar.  
   
   
       5 . The wind protection system according to  claim 2 , the anchor system comprising at least one ground screw.  
   
   
       6 . The wind protection system according to  claim 1 , wherein the roof ballast modules further comprise a drain valve.  
   
   
       7 . The wind protection system according to  claim 1 , wherein the roof ballast modules further comprise a second port disposed on at least one of the plurality of bladders, the second port permitting the liquid to spillover from the interior to the exterior of the plurality of bladders.  
   
   
       8 . The wind protection system according to  claim 1 , the bladders being formed from first panel and a second panel sealed together to define the interior and exterior of the bladders.  
   
   
       9 . The wind protection system according to  claim 1 , wherein the roof ballast modules further comprise grommets disposed about a periphery of the roof ballast modules.  
   
   
       10 . The wind protection system according to  claim 1 , the first port further comprising a threaded water hose connector.  
   
   
       11 . The wind protection system according to  claim 1 , wherein the first port comprises a valve.  
   
   
       12 . A roof ballast module comprising: 
 a plurality of liquid impermeable bladders, the bladders defining an interior and an exterior;    a first port on one of the bladders permitting the interior of the bladder to be filled with a liquid; and    at least one channel permitting fluid communication between the interiors of plurality of the plurality of elongate bladders.    
   
   
       13 . The roof ballast module of  claim 12 , further comprising a drain valve disposed on at least one of the plurality of bladders.  
   
   
       14 . The roof ballast module of  claim 12 , wherein each of the plurality of bladders is elongate such that the plurality of elongate bladders comprise being disposed parallel to one another.  
   
   
       15 . The roof ballast module of  claim 12 , further comprising a second port permitting the liquid to spillover from the interior to the exterior of the plurality of bladders.  
   
   
       16 . The roof ballast module of  claim 12 , the bladders being formed from a first panel and a spaced second panel; the first panel and the second panel being sealed to one another along a common periphery to define the interior between the first panel and the second panel.  
   
   
       17 . The roof ballast module of  claim 12 , further comprising grommets disposed about a periphery of the roof ballast module.  
   
   
       18 . The roof ballast module of  claim 12 , the first valve further comprising a threaded water hose connector.  
   
   
       19 . The roof ballast module of  claim 12 , wherein the first port comprises a valve.  
   
   
       20 . A method of protecting a building from high winds comprising: 
 placing a plurality of liquid impermeable bladder modules on a rigid roof; and    filling the liquid impermeable bladder modules with a liquid.    
   
   
       21 . The method according to  claim 20 , further comprising, connecting several of the plurality of bladder modules together so that one of the bladder modules receives a liquid spillover from another one of the connected bladder modules.  
   
   
       22 . The method according to  claim 20 , further comprising: 
 attaching a protective shield adjacent the roof of the building; and    anchoring the protective shield to the ground to secure the protective shield in place against high winds.    
   
   
       23 . The method according to  claim 20 , wherein the step of placing a plurality of liquid impermeable bladders on a rigid roof further comprises placing elongate liquid impermeable bladders on a sloping roof such that the longitudinal axis of the liquid impermeable bladders is distributed from a higher elevation on the roof to a lower elevation on the roof.  
   
   
       24 . A wind protection system comprising: 
 a plurality of roof ballast modules adapted to be disposed on a rigid roof, each roof ballast module comprising: 
 at least one liquid impermeable bladder, the bladder defining an interior and an exterior;  
 a first port on at least one of the bladders permitting the interior of the bladder to be filled with a liquid;  
 a second port on at least one of the bladders permitting liquid to spillover from the interior of the bladder;  
   wherein at least two of the plurality of roof ballast modules are connected from a first module's second port to a second module's first port to permit filling the second modules by the liquid spillover from the first module.    
   
   
       25 . The wind protection system according to  claim 24 , the bladders being formed from first panel and a second panel sealed together to define the interior and exterior of the bladders.  
   
   
       26 . The wind protection system according to  claim 24 , wherein the roof ballast modules further comprise grommets disposed about a periphery of the roof ballast modules.  
   
   
       27 . The wind protection system according to  claim 24 , the first port and second port each further comprise a threaded water hose connector.  
   
   
       28 . The wind protection system according to  claim 24 , wherein the first port and second port each comprises a valve.
