Claims

Abstract

Compositions useful for treating inflammatory diseases including arthritis are disclosed which comprise cetyl myristoleate compounds or related compounds and at least one compound useful for treatment of inflammatory disease, such as tetracycline compounds, Cox-2 inhibitors, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, local anaesthetics, chelating agents, matrix metalloprotease inhibitors, inhibitors of inflammatory cytokines, glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate and collagen hydrolysate. Also disclosed are pharmaceutical compositions and methods of treatment for inflammatory disease and local inflammation and dermal irritation. Also disclosed are compositions including tetracycline and at least one compound useful for treatment of inflammatory disease.

1 . A method of treating envenomation in a mammal which comprises topical application of at least one local anaesthetic and at least one protease for a time and in amounts effective to reduce inflammation.  
   
   
       2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the local anaesthetic is selected from the group consisting of lidocaine, ropivicaine, prilocalne, americaine, bupivicaine, benzocaine, long acting topical anaesthetic (LTA), and eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics (EMLA®).  
   
   
       3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the local anaesthetic is a racemic or an optimal mixture of levo and dextro forms.  
   
   
       4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the local anaesthetic is a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics and the protease is papain or stromolysin.  
   
   
       5 . The method of  claim 1 , which further comprises topical application of a substance which increases absorption for a time and in an amount effective to increase absorption and reduce inflammation.  
   
   
       6 . The method of  claim 1 , which further comprises administration of a steroid for a time and in an amount effective to reduce inflammation.  
   
   
       7 . The method of  claim 1 , which further comprises administration of a topical antibiotic for a time and in an amount effective to reduce inflammation.  
   
   
       8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein one or both of the local anaesthetic and the protease is formulated in a vehicle comprising micelles, microsomes, liposomes or fatty acids.  
   
   
       9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein one or both of the local anaesthetic and the protease is in a time-release formulation.  
   
   
       10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the topical application is via a liquid, solid, semi-solid, spray, patch, bandage or other occlusive or adhesive preparation.  
   
   
       11 . A method of treating inflammation in a mammal which comprises topical application of at least one local anaesthetic and at least one protease for a time and in amounts effective to reduce inflammation.  
   
   
       12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the local anaesthetic is a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics and the protease is papain or stromolysin.

       20 . A composition for treating inflammation or envenomation in a mammal comprising and effective amount of at least one local anaesthetic and an effective amount of at least one protease useful for treating inflammation or envenomation by topical application.  
   
   
       21 . The composition of  claim 20 , wherein the local anaesthetic is a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics and the protease is papain or stromolysin.
