Abstract

A metal piece having an organic coating with improved corrosion resistance and adhesion is described which comprises a zinc or zinc alloy plated metal piece having on its surface, a chromate film deposited from an aqueous acidic chromium solution comprising trivalent chromium as substantially the only chromium ion present, and a cathodic electrocoated siccative organic coating on the chromate film. In one embodiment, the zinc alloy includes a substantial gamma crystallographic phase. A process for obtaining such coated metal pieces also is described.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
. A metal piece having an organic coating with improved corrosion resistance and adhesion comprising a zinc or zinc alloy plated metal piece having on its surface, a chromate film deposited from an aqueous acidic chromium solution comprising trivalent chromium as substantially the only chromium ion present, and a cathodic electrocoated siccative organic coating on the chromate film.

. The metal piece of claim 1 wherein the metal comprises aluminum, iron, steel, magnesium, magnesium alloy or galvanized iron.

. The metal piece of claim 1 wherein the metal is steel.

. The metal piece of claim 1 which comprises a zinc alloy plated metal piece.

. The metal piece of claim 1 comprising a zinc-nickel or zinc-iron alloy plated metal piece.

. The metal piece of claim 1 wherein the chromate film is derived from an aqueous acidic chromium solution comprising trivalent chromium as substantially the only chromium ion present, chloride ions and nitrate ions.

. The metal piece of claim 6 wherein the aqueous acidic chromium solution also comprises zinc ions and fluoride ions.

. The metal piece of claim 1 wherein the siccative organic coating is coated with a lubricant film.

. The metal piece of claim 4 wherein the zinc alloy comprises a substantial gamma crystallographic phase.

. The metal piece of claim 5 wherein the zinc-nickel alloy comprises a substantial gamma crystallographic phase.

. A metal piece having an organic coating with improved corrosion resistance and adhesion comprising a zinc alloy plated metal piece having on its surface, a chromate film deposited from an aqueous acidic chromium solution comprising trivalent chromium as substantially the only chromium ion present, and a cathodic electrocoated siccative organic coating on the chromate film, wherein the zinc alloy comprises a substantial gamma crystallographic phase.

. The metal piece of claim 11 wherein the metal comprises aluminum, iron, steel, magnesium, magnesium alloy or galvanized iron.

. The metal piece of claim 11 wherein the zinc alloy comprises a zinc-nickel or zinc-iron alloy.

. The metal piece of claim 11 wherein the chromate film is derived from an aqueous acidic chromium solution comprising trivalent chromium as substantially the only chromium ion present, chloride ions and nitrate ions.

. The metal piece of claim 14 wherein the aqueous acidic chromium solution also comprises zinc ions and fluoride ions.

. The metal piece of claim 11 wherein the siccative organic coating is coated with a lubricant film.

. A metal piece having an organic coating with improved corrosion resistance and adhesion comprising a zinc-nickel alloy plated metal piece having on its surface, a chromate film deposited from an aqueous acidic chromium solution comprising trivalent chromium as substantially the only chromium ion present, and a cathodic electrocoated siccative organic coating on the chromate film, wherein the zinc-nickel alloy comprises a substantial gamma crystallographic phase.

. The metal piece of claim 17 wherein the metal comprises aluminum, iron, steel, magnesium, magnesium alloy or galvanized iron.

. The metal piece of claim 17 wherein the chromate film is derived from an aqueous acidic chromium solution comprising trivalent chromium as substantially the only chromium ion present, chloride ions and nitrate ions.

. The metal piece of claim 19 wherein the aqueous acidic chromium solution also comprises zinc ions and fluoride ions.

. The metal piece of claim 17 wherein the siccative organic coating is coated with a lubricant film.
