Abstract

In accordance with the present invention there is provided an additive for cold rolling lubricants which improves the lubricity, as well as the cooling properties, of the lubricant. According to the present invention, a polar liquid with a boiling point between 25° C. and 500° C. may function as an additive for cold rolling lubricants. The additive is added to a typical cold rolling lubricant such as an oil comprising of 5-10 percent fatty alcohol and 1-2 percent fatty ester in a hydrocarbon oil. The additive is added to the rolling lubricant in the proportions of about 0.1 to 10 percent, preferably about 1 to 4 percent and more preferably about 1 to about 3 percent. The additive of the present invention lowers friction at higher rolling speeds and metal reductions and exhibits an improved cooling ability. Optionally, a small amount of water may be added to the additive/lubricant composition to further increase the composition's cooling ability. In one aspect of the present invention the additive/lubricant may also contain less than 1 percent corrosion inhibitor.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A metalworking lubricant comprising:
a polar liquid having a boiling point between 25° C. and 500° C.; a hydrocarbon oil-based base oil; water in an amount less than 1 percent; wherein a metal that is cold-rolled with the metal working lubricant is substantially free of staining; and wherein the lubricant has a cooling effect of a cold rolling metalworking lubricant with higher levels of water.

2 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the base oil comprises:
about 1 percent to about 10 percent fatty alcohol; about 1 percent to about 10 percent fatty ester; and the balance of hydrocarbon oil.

3 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the amount of polar liquid is in the range of about 0.1 percent to about 10 percent.

4 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the amount of polar liquid is in the range of about 1 percent to about 4 percent.

5 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the amount of polar liquid is in the range of about 1 percent to about 3 percent.

6 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polar liquid is a dialkylene glycol.

7 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 6 wherein the dialkylene glycol is dipropylene glycol.

8 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 6 wherein the dialkylene glycol is diethylene glycol.

9 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polar liquid is propylene glycol.

10 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polar liquid is polyalkylene glycol.

       11 . (canceled)

       12 . (canceled)

13 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the amount of water is less than or equal to about 300 parts per million.

14 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the amount of water is less than or equal to about 200 parts per million.

15 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the lubricant further comprises less than 1 percent corrosion inhibitor.

16 . A metalworking lubricant in accordance with claim 1 wherein the lubricant further comprises an anti-staining additive.
