Abstract

Compositions are disclosed for inhibiting oxidation and photooxidation in polyurethane foams. The compositions contain an antioxidant and a UV light inhibiting compound, along with an organic solvent or alternatively, water and an emulsifier.

1 . A composition for increasing the oxidative and photooxidative stability of a polyurethane foam comprising: 
 a) an organic solvent;    b) an ultraviolet (UV) light inhibiting compound; and    c) an antioxidant    
   
   
       2 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the organic solvent comprises about 95 to about 98 wt % of the total composition.  
   
   
       3 . The composition of  claim 2 , wherein the organic solvent is selected from acetone, chloroform, ethanol, methanol, butanol, propanol, and low molecular weight ketones.  
   
   
       4 . The composition of  claim 2  wherein the UV light inhibiting compound is selected from a UV stabilizer, a UV absorber and a UV quencher.  
   
   
       5 . The composition of  claim 4 , wherein the UV light inhibiting compound is present in an amount of about 0.1 to about 5 wt % of the total composition.  
   
   
       6 . The composition of  claim 5  wherein the UV light inhibiting compound is a UV stabilizer.  
   
   
       7 . The composition of  claim 6 , wherein the UV stabilizer is selected from a benzophenone, a triazine, a benzotriazole and a hindered amine light stabilizer.  
   
   
       8 . The composition of  claim 3 , wherein the antioxidant comprises about 0.1 to about 5 wt % of the total composition.  
   
   
       9 . The composition of  claim 8 , wherein the antioxidant comprises a phenolic substance.  
   
   
       10 . The composition of  claim 9 , wherein the antioxidant is selected from Alpha Tocopherol; Benzopropanoic Acid, 3-5-bis (1,1-dimethyl-ethyl)-4-hydroxy-C7-C9 branched alkyl esters; 2-6-Ditertiary-butyl nonylphenol; and 2-6-Ditertiary-butyl-4secbutyl-phenol.  
   
   
       11 . An aqueous emulsion for increasing the oxidative and photooxidative stability of a polyurethane foam, said emulsion comprising 
 a) water:    b) an emulsifier;    c) an ultraviolet (UV) light inhibiting compound; and    d) an antioxidant.    
   
   
       12 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 11 , wherein the water comprises about 95 to about 98 wt % of the total emulsion.  
   
   
       13 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 12 , wherein the emulsifier comprises about 0.001 to about 2 wt % of the total emulsion.  
   
   
       14 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 11 , wherein the UV light inhibiting compound is present in an amount of about 0.1 to about 5 wt % of the total emulsion.  
   
   
       15 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 14 , wherein the antioxidant comprises about 0.1 to about 5 wt % of the total emulsion.  
   
   
       16 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 11  wherein the emulsifier is selected from polyoxyethylene octyl phenyl ether, ethoxylated mono-, di- and trialkylphenols, ethoxylated fatty alcohols and ethoxylated oxo alcohols.  
   
   
       17 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 9  wherein the UV light inhibiting compound is selected from a benzophenone, a triazine, a benzotriazole and a hindered amine light stabilizer.  
   
   
       18 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 11  wherein the antioxidant is selected from Alpha Tocopherol; Benzopropanoic Acid, 3-5-bis (1,1-dimethyl-ethyl)-4-hydroxy-C7-C9 branched alkyl esters; 2-6-Ditertiary-butyl nonylphenol; and 2-6-Ditertiry-butyl-4secbutyl-phenol.  
   
   
       19 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 18  wherein the antioxidant comprises Alpha Tocopherol.  
   
   
       20 . The aqueous emulsion of  claim 19  wherein the UV light inhibiting compound comprises TINUVIN 213.  
   
   
       21 . A method for increasing the oxidative and photooxidative stability of a polyurethane foam comprising the step of treating the polyurethane foam with a composition according to  claim 11 .  
   
   
       22 . The method of  claim 21  wherein the composition is sprayed onto a surface of the polyurethane foam.
