Abstract

Topical skin care compositions containing sugar amines in combination with selected skin care actives and methods of using such compositions to regulate the condition of skin are disclosed. The compositions contain a safe and effective amount of a sugar amine in combination with either a safe and effective amount of a terpene alcohol and a safe and effective amount of a retinoid; a safe and effective amount of a terpene alcohol and a safe and effective amount of a peptide; a safe and effective amount of a retinoid and a safe and effective amount of a peptide; a safe and effective amount of tocopherol sorbate; or a safe and effective amount of a vitamin B 3 compound.

1 . A topical skin care composition, comprising: 
 a) a sugar amine;    b) a safe and effective amount of a vitamin B 3  compound;    c) a silicone elastomer; and    d) a dermatologically acceptable carrier.    
   
   
       2 . The composition according to  claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from about 0.05% to about 10% of the sugar amine.  
   
   
       3 . The composition according to  claim 2 , wherein the composition comprises from about 2% to about 5% of the sugar amine.  
   
   
       4 . The composition according to  claim 1 , wherein the sugar amine is selected from the group consisting of glucosamine, derivatives of glucosamine, mannosamine, derivatives of mannosamine, galactosamine, derivatives of galactosamine, and mixtures thereof.  
   
   
       5 . The composition according to  claim 1 , wherein the sugar amine is selected from the group consisting of glucosamine, N-acetyl glucosamine, galactosamine, N-acetyl galactosamine, mannosamine, N-acetyl mannosamine, and mixtures thereof.  
   
   
       6 . The composition according to  claim 1 , further comprising a particulate material.  
   
   
       7 . The composition according to  claim 6 , wherein the particulate material is selected from the group consisting of bismuth oxychloride, iron oxide, mica, mica treated with barium sulfate and TiO2, silica, nylon, polyethylene, talc, styrene, polypropylene, ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, bismuth oxychloride, sericite, aluminum oxide, silicone resin, barium sulfate, calcium carbonate, cellulose acetate, polymethyl methacrylate, and mixtures thereof.  
   
   
       8 . The composition according to  claim 1 , further comprising a sunscreen active.  
   
   
       9 . The composition according to  claim 8 , wherein the sunscreen active is selected from the group consisting of 4,4′-t-butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane, 2-ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate, phenyl benzimidazole sulfonic acid, octocrylene, and mixtures thereof.  
   
   
       10 . A topical skin care composition, comprising: 
 a) a sugar amine;    b) a vitamin B 3  compound;    c) an organic sunscreen active; and    d) a dermatologically acceptable carrier.    
   
   
       11 . The composition according to  claim 10 , wherein the composition comprises from about 2% to 5% of the sugar amine.  
   
   
       12 . The composition according to  claim 10 , wherein the composition comprises from about 0.2% to about 5% of the vitamin B 3  compound.  
   
   
       13 . The composition of  claim 10 , wherein the organic sunscreen is selected from the group consisting of 4,4′-t-butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane, 2-ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate, phenyl benzimidazole sulfonic acid, octocrylene, and mixtures thereof.  
   
   
       14 . The composition of  claim 10 , further comprising a particulate material.  
   
   
       15 . The composition according to  claim 14 , wherein the particulate material is selected from the group consisting of bismuth oxychloride, iron oxide, mica, mica treated with barium sulfate and TiO2, silica, nylon, polyethylene, talc, styrene, polypropylene, ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, bismuth oxychloride, sericite, aluminum oxide, silicone resin, barium sulfate, calcium carbonate, cellulose acetate, polymethyl methacrylate, and mixtures thereof.  
   
   
       16 . A method for regulating mammalian skin condition, comprising the step of chronically applying the composition according to  claim 1  to an area of skin in need of regulation.  
   
   
       17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the composition is applied for a period of at least about one month.  
   
   
       18 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the composition is applied for a period of at least about three months.  
   
   
       19 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the composition comprises from about 2% to 5% of the sugar amine.  
   
   
       20 . A method for regulating mammalian skin condition, comprising the step of chronically applying the composition according to  claim 10  to an area of skin in need of regulation.
