Abstract
The present invention relates to a method for automatically tracking blood product administration in a computerized healthcare environment. Information regarding a blood product unit received by the blood bank department is documented in a database. An indication that the blood product unit has been administered to the patient by a healthcare provider is received and the database is automatically updated to reflect that the blood product unit has been administered to the patient. The present invention also relates to a method for automatically notifying a blood bank database of administration of a blood product to a patient in a computerized healthcare environment is provided

documenting information regarding a blood product unit received by the blood bank department in a database; receiving indication that the blood product unit has been administered to the patient by a healthcare provider; and automatically updating the database to reflect that the blood product unit has been administered to the patient.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
documenting compatibility of the blood product unit for a patient in the database.
3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
documenting the dispense of the blood product unit for a patient in the database.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the blood product unit is compared to a specimen from a patient to determine compatibility.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the database is a blood bank database.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the blood product unit is identified by an identifier assigned by a blood product supplier.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient is identified by a patient identification number.
8 . A computer-readable medium comprising the method of claim 1 .
9 . A method for automatically notifying a blood bank database of administration of a blood product to a patient in a computerized healthcare environment, the method comprising:
identifying a blood product to be administered to a patient; identifying a patient; and notifying a blood bank database of administration of the blood product to the patient.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the blood product is identified by an identifier assigned by a blood product supplier.
11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the patient is identified by a patient identification number.
12 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising determining whether the blood administration is complete.
13 . The method of claim 13 , wherein if the administration of the blood product is complete, notifying the blood bank database of the completed administration.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein if the administration of the blood product is not complete, notifying the blood bank database of the incomplete transfusion.
15 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
notifying the blood bank database of the start date and time of the blood product administration.
16 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:
notifying the blood bank database of the stop date and time of the blood product administration.
17 . A computer readable medium comprising the method of claim 8 .
18 . A system for automatically tracking blood product administration in a computerized healthcare environment, the system comprising:
a documenting component for documenting information regarding a blood product unit received by the blood bank department in a database; a receiving component for receiving indication that the blood product unit has been administered to the patient by a healthcare provider; and an updating component for automatically updating the database to reflect that the blood product unit has been administered to the patient.
19 . The system of claim 18 , further comprising:
a second documenting component for documenting compatibility of the blood product unit for a patient in the database.
20 . The system of claim 19 , further comprising:
a third documenting component for documenting the dispense of the blood product unit for a patient in the database.
21 . The system of claim 18 further comprising:
a comparing component for comparing the blood product unit to a specimen from a patient to detemiine compatibility.
22 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the database is a blood bank database.
23 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the blood product unit is identified by an identifier assigned by a blood product supplier.
24 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the patient is identified by a patient identification number.
25 . A system for automatically notifying a blood bank database of administration of a blood product to a patient in a computerized healthcare environment, the system comprising:
a first identifying component for identifying the blood product to be administered to a patient; a second identifying component for identifying the patient; and a notifying component for notifying a blood bank database of administration of the blood product to the patient.
26 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the blood product unit is identified by an identifier assigned by a blood product supplier.
27 . The system of claim 25 , wherein the patient is identified by a patient identification number.
28 . The system of claim 25 further comprising:
a determining component for determining whether the blood administration is complete.
29 . The system of claim 28 , wherein if the administration of the blood product is complete, notifying the blood bank database of the completed administration.
30 . The system of claim 28 , wherein if the administration of the blood product is not complete, notifying the blood bank database of the incomplete transfusion.
31 . The system of claim 25 , further comprising:
a third noting component for notifying the blood bank database of the start date and time of the blood product administration.
