Abstract

A method for antimicrobial treatment comprising applying to microbes a composition containing a diluting solvent (e.g., water), an antimicrobially-active solvent having a density different from the density of the diluting solvent, and an optional cosolvent, surfactant, or additional antimicrobial agent, wherein the amount of antimicrobially-active solvent or additional antimicrobial agent is sufficiently high and the amount of cosolvent or surfactant is sufficiently low so that the composition will provide greater than a 1-log order reduction in the population of bacteria or spores of Bacillus cereus within 10 seconds at 60° C. Preferred methods of the invention employ compositions containing an additional antimicrobial agent such as peroxyacetic acid. Compositions for use in the method can be prepared as concentrates, and used full strength or in diluted form.

         50 . A method of reducing the population of a microbe comprising: 
 applying to microbes a composition comprising: 
 diluting solvent;  
 antimicrobially-active solvent having a density different from the density of the diluting solvent and comprising ether, hydroxyether, C 1-6  protonated carboxylic acid, or mixture thereof;  
 additional antimicrobial agent comprising carboxylic acid, active oxygen compound, or mixture thereof; and  
 optional cosolvent, surfactant, or mixture thereof.  
   
     
     
         51 . The method of  claim 50 , wherein the amount of antimicrobially-active solvent or additional antimicrobial agent is sufficiently high and the amount of cosolvent or surfactant is sufficiently low so that the composition will provide greater than a I-log order reduction in the population of spores or bacteria of  Bacillus cereus  within 10 seconds at 60° C.  
     
     
         52 . The method of  claim 50 , wherein the diluting solvent comprises water.  
     
     
         53 . The method of  claim 50 , wherein the antimicrobially active solvent comprises ethylene glycol phenyl ether, propylene glycol phenyl ether 2-ethyl-1-hexanoic acid, butyric acid, octanoic acid, heptanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         54 . The method of  claim 53 , wherein the antimicrobially active solvent comprises 2-ethyl-1-hexanoic acid, butyric acid, octanoic acid, heptanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         55 . The method of  claim 50 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises butyric acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         56 . The method of  claim 50 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises peracid.  
     
     
         57 . The method of  claim 56 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises peracetic acid, perheptanoic acid, peroctanoic acid, perdecanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         58 . The method of  claim 50 , wherein the composition comprises surfactant and the surfactant comprises anionic surfactant.  
     
     
         59 . The method of  claim 58 , wherein the anionic surfactant comprises C 6 -C 24  alkylbenzene sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  olefin sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  paraffin sulfonates, cumene sulfonate, xylene sulfonate, C 6 -C 24  alkyl naphthalene sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  alkyl or dialkyl diphenyl ether sulfonates or disulfonates, C 4 -C 24  mono or dialkyl sulfosuccinates, sulfonated or sulfated fatty acids, C 6 -C 24  alcohol sulfates, C 6 -C 24  alcohol ether sulfates having 1 to about 20 ethylene oxide groups C 4 -C 24  alkyl, aryl or alkaryl phosphate esters or their alkoxylated analogues having 1 to about 40 ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide units, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         60 . The method of  claim 50 , comprising applying the composition to a hard surface.  
     
     
         61 . An antimicrobial concentrate and instructions for mixing the concentrate with water, 
 the concentrate comprising: 
 antimicrobially-active solvent having a density different from the density of water and comprising ether, hydroxyether, C 1-16  protonated carboxylic acid, or mixture thereof;  
 additional antimicrobial agent comprising carboxylic acid, active oxygen compound, or mixture thereof, and  
 optional cosolvent, surfactant, or mixture thereof.  
   
     
     
         62 . The composition of  claim 61 , wherein the amount of antimicrobially-active solvent or additional antimicrobial agent is sufficiently high and the amount of cosolvent or surfactant is sufficiently low so that the composition will provide greater than a 1-log order reduction in the population of spores or bacteria of  Bacillus cereus  within 10 seconds at 60° C.  
     
     
         63 . The composition of  claim 61 , wherein the antimicrobially active solvent comprises 2-ethyl-1-hexanoic acid, butyric acid, octanoic acid, heptanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         64 . The composition of  claim 61 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises butyric acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, decanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         65 . The composition of  claim 61 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises peracid.  
     
     
         66 . The composition of  claim 65 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises peracetic acid, perheptanoic acid, peroctanoic acid, perdecanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         67 . The composition of  claim 61 , the composition comprising surfactant and the surfactant comprising anionic surfactant.  
     
     
         68 . The composition of  claim 67 , wherein the anionic surfactant comprises C 6 -C 24  alkylbenzene sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  olefin sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  paraffin sulfonates, cumene sulfonate, xylene sulfonate, C 6 -C 24  alkyl naphthalene sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  alkyl or dialkyl diphenyl ether sulfonates or disulfonates, C 4 -C 24  mono or dialkyl sulfosuccinates, sulfonated or sulfated fatty acids, C 6 -C 24  alcohol sulfates, C 6 -C 24  alcohol ether sulfates having 1 to about 20 ethylene oxide groups, C 4 -C 24  alky, aryl or alkaryl phosphate esters or their alkoxylated analogues having 1 to about 40 ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide units, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         69 . The composition of  claim 61 , wherein the amount of antimicrobially-active solvent is sufficiently high and the amount of cosolvent or surfactant is sufficiently low so that a clear single-phase solution or microemulsion is not formed when the concentrate is mixed with water according to the instructions.  
     
     
         70 . An antimicrobial composition comprising: 
 diluting solvent;    antimicrobially-active solvent having a density different from the density of the diluting solvent and comprising ether, hydroxyether, C 1-16  protonated carboxylic acid, or mixture thereof;    additional antimicrobial agent comprising carboxylic acid, active oxygen compound, or mixture thereof; and    optional cosolvent, surfactant, or mixture thereof.    
     
     
         71 . The composition of  claim 70 , wherein the amount of antimicrobially-active solvent or additional antimicrobial agent is sufficiently high and the amount of cosolvent or surfactant is sufficiently low so that the composition will provide greater than a 1-log order reduction in the population of spores or bacteria of  Bacillus cereus  within 10 seconds at 60° C.  
     
     
         72 . The composition of  claim 70 , wherein the diluting solvent comprises water.

         75 . The composition of  claim 70 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises peracid.  
     
     
         76 . The composition of  claim 75 , wherein the additional antimicrobial agent comprises peracetic acid, perheptanoic acid, peroctanoic acid, perdecanoic acid, or mixture thereof.  
     
     
         77 . The composition of  claim 70 , the composition comprising surfactant and the surfactant comprising anionic surfactant.

The composition of  claim 77 , wherein the anionic surfactant comprises C 6 -C 24  alkylbenzene sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  olefin sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  paraffin sulfonates, cumene sulfonate, xylene sulfonate, C 6 -C 24  alkyl naphthalene sulfonates, C 6 -C 24  alkyl or dialkyl diphenyl ether sulfonates or disulfonates, C 4 -C 24  mono or dialkyl sulfosuccinates, sulfonated or sulfated fatty acids, C 6 -C 24  alcohol sulfates, C 6 -C 24  alcohol ether sulfates having 1 to about 20 ethylene oxide groups, C 4 -C 24  alkyl, aryl or alkaryl phosphate esters or their alkoxylated analogues having 1 to about 40 ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide units, or mixture thereof.
