Abstract

The invention is directed to a composition and method in which dried stinging nettle is applied to the skin proximate a pain site to alleviate pain associated with various inflammatory conditions. The characteristic sting of the stinging nettle is absent in the dried nettle of the composition and method.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A composition for alleviating or inhibiting pain associated with: inflammation in a mammal, the composition comprising: 
 a portion of a dried stinging nettle    
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the portion is selected from the group consisting of bud, leaf, stem, root, seed, and combinations thereof.  
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the portion is in a form selected from the group consisting of flakes, a powder, and combinations thereof.  
     
     
         4 . A composition for alleviating or inhibiting pain associated with inflammation in a mammal, the composition consisting essentially of: 
 a portion of a dried stinging nettle plant.    
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 4 , wherein the portion is selected from the group consisting of bud, leaf, stem, root, seed, and combinations thereof.  
     
     
         6 . The composition of  claim 4 , wherein the portion is in a form selected from the group consisting of flakes, a powder, and combinations thereof.
